I've got a few ounces of gold I've pulled out of rivers over the years in in the closet.

If you really believe something like this will happen, you can buy a year's worth of food with a 30+ year shelf life from a Mormon cannery for like $400. You'll be eating beans, rice, oatmeal, etc., but you won't starve!

My pop was a geologist and we did that growing up sometimes, people just don't know how much panning is involved in order to get a gram of gold ore....

Stockpiling precious metals for investment/security is a good idea. I just wont be breaking it out to try and barter for things in a government collapse. I mainly have it for two reasons. 1st is for tax reasons.. most of my "wealth" isn't in a bank. 2nd is because gold/silver wont get destroyed in a natural disaster like paper money. My whole place could burn to cinders and I'd still have my gold.

IMO the best long term survival type investment you can make is a quality air gun. I'm not talking about a pellet gun.. I mean something like a .50 caliber high powered air gun. As long as you have a mold to pour melted lead into and a air pump you have a weapon that can hunt big game.

Ammo is your best bet for a true currency in a crisis. 9mm and 30.06 should be safe bets. Plus any military rounds like 7.62 or .223.

lot of posters are assuming guns will be available for stealing/acquiring the necessities for life. if there were no guns (like a repeal of the 2nd amendment and the USA going the European/Australian route), what would be used to acquire things? IMO, silver/gold.

If they repeal the 2nd Amendment and confiscate all guns, there is a very good chance I will be dead or imprisoned after the battle to keep my guns.

Guns. At least the ones people weren't dumb enough to hand over.

I hear you, but no one knows what they will do in a moment. it's easy to say we would die with our pistol in hand. most people are not islands. there's family and lots of other things to consider.
you do realize that in a real sense the 2nd amendment is one dead/retired SC judge and a democrat majority in Congress from possible removal.

Not everyone lives on a 100 by 200 foot lot. On a as little as a few acres.. it'd be hard to find weapons that are hid.

This is true my friend and having a sack of silver/gold to make sure you keep them might be the difference.

Don't get me wrong.. not dissing the choice to stock up a bit on precious metals. Everyone's got their own plans, and depending on geography.. each could be the difference. what will work in one area, may/may not work in another.. all depends on population and demand

Most medications have a short shelf life....2 years after the collapse what will you be trading for them?

Gold/Silver

The country wouldn't revert to caveman days. Probably on the lines of a third world country. And weapons and metals would be taken by the gov. They have already taken gold in the past. Worst case, we would look something like a western African country.

ETA:

More of an Eastern European country.
