I think it's interesting that most of the salmon we eat has to be altered with toxic chemicals to appear like real salmon.
Cool if you don't.
Read the Wal-mart Effect. Salmon consumption in this country is another example of multinational(in this specific situation South America, even more specifically Chile) exploitation engineering from Northwest Arkansas.

Raising carnivorous fish like salmon that require a high percentage of protein derived from wild fish in their feed also has a significant impact on the environment. More kilograms of wild fish are used to raise salmon than farmed salmon produced, depleting wild fish stocks rather than supplementing them.
But, I thought it was a bad thing that they were getting fed more and more non-fish products?

Farmed salmon also breeds with wild, destroying the natural dna
Does farmed salmon have artificial DNA?
Lets review:
Farm raised salmon are bad because they have low amounts of Omega-3s.
Farm raised salmon are bad because they have too high levels of Omega-3s.
Farm raised salmon are bad because they are being fed non-fishmeal products, which decreases the nutrients.
Farm raised salmon are bad because they consume too many fishmeal products, depleting wild fish counts.
Farm raised salmon are bad because they get out and interbreed with wild populations (assuming they are GMOs that are resistant or something)
Farm raised salmon are bad because they require large amounts of pesticides due to their lack of resistance to disease.
Did I cover all the bases?

It's a lot easier to play the advocate, especially on this site.
If you'd like to think farm raised is better for individuals and the environment, go for it.
Common sense would say otherwise.

It always amazes me:
The "ancients" have some herbal remedies that are superior to 'big-pharma' medications
Pesticides in agriculture are bad. Need to eat like the "old days".
Farm raised fish are terrible for our health
Yet, each generation lives longer and is in better health than the one before?
weird

Primarily due to vaccines and finally getting lead out of our gasoline.

This could be the dumbest thing I've read on this site.

Fair enough.
Point for you

I can't remember the last time I bought food from Wal-Mart.

Every time I read this title I see "Did you know farmed salmon was gay?"

Doesn't matter, it's economies of scale. The fact that Wal-mart and Costco have both been buying their salmon from Chile means that's where the investment in salmon farms is, creating a price point where the market didn't exist before, and making the only primary way to compete with that price point is to also farm raise your salmon, and the cheapest place to do that now being the exact same Chilean farms Wal-mart uses.
Just because you don't but Wal-Mart food in absolutely no way does that mean you don't eat Wal-Mart food.
That being said I don't care. Farm raised vs wild... meh. Your body can handle some garbage.

Probably something your subconscious needs to work out with you.

It's ok to eat farmed salmon if that's your thing. Farming has come a long way over the past 10 years or so, in cleaning up it's act. It's still not there yet however.
But put the sea lice, parasites and viruses aside, wild fresh salmon tastes better and has a much much better texture. Some commercial operations have learned to improve the flavor of their farmed salmon with additives and packing in a 4% salt solution. Costco frozen Norwegian isn't too bad.
