When Texas declared independence, the new country claimed land all the way to the rio grande, including Santa Fe. An expedition of several hundred Texas troops was sent to inform the city that they were now Texans. Santa Fe disagreed, and the Texans were sent home empty handed.

over 50% of English words come directly from French.

Every word in the English language that ends in "ion" has the same meaning and can be used in the same way in French.
