First and foremost, he's not afraid of losing. He did talk a lot of shite so shittalking him is to be expected.
My top suspicion is:
He wants to make more money, and is doing this to protest it. Dude has money and can retire young, so why not make a power play?
My secondary suspicion is: Maybe he wants to protect his body for later on in life. I teach MMA in Mexico City (their gyms are awful) and I always make it a top priority to protect my students' noggins. After that Brazilian dude died, I wouldn't fault him.
My third suspicion is: He's got something else worked out. Movie deal, maybe he's going to open his own gym in Ireland. It's a much easier life than training six to eight hours a day to go out and fight in front of a bunch of people.

Nah, just came to his senses about the Diaz rematch.

No, he just didn't want to do the fight promo, so Dana White then told him he's canceling his match. A fighter must do the fight promos, that's really standard for the whole deal. If he's not going to do the promo/press then it's harder for the org to market the fight. IF UFC had allowed him to skip the promo/press, then a lot of fighters would start doing the same. White has to treat all the fighters equally. McGregor has been a professional fighter for awhile, he knew that he had to do the press too.

Apart from the pain he's likely to feel later on, he's 27 and looks every bit of 37. This would be a wise decision.
