My brother who was 12 and I was 6 shot himself in the head right in front of me. He tried to cover my eyes with his hand but I saw everything. Still til this day I remember it all wish I could have done something.
I thought about it my self last year when my wife had an affair and took everything but I finally pickedup myself and knew I have to be strong for my son. Depression is a bitch but can be kicked

Yep I had just finished school and was ready to propose to my girlfriend and the week that I was headed home to break the news to her.....she broke up with me. It killed my soul. I had a hard time dealing with that. Then on top of that I lost my job due to layoff and then had about $60k in student loans to pay. It was so overwhelming at the time that I put me in a huge state of depression. I was not happy for a very long time. I resorted to drinking heavily every day. I felt I had nothing. Then one I thought about the whole needle and insulin thing. Was ready to go through with it and then it was like some sense was knocked into my head.

I don't take any medication for depression. It usually comes and goes. When I feel it coming on...as it has been the past couple days, I usually plan a trip somewhere and get my mind straight. I'll probably head to the beach this weekend.

I'm pretty much the pro-suicide guy on the board, 2 of my best friends killed themselves the last couple years and their families are wrecks now. I think if someone desires to no longer exist, our Bill of Rights guarantees the pursuit of happiness and if the will to no longer pursue happiness is there, then after 3 months of counseling and getting your affairs in order and giving the family a chance to discuss the issues and fix them, or acquiese to the wishes of death, then have a judge sign off and do it in a sterile manner that eliminates the trauma and mess the rest of us and emergency response personel are left with.

Yikes. Aside from the moral issue, this assumes people wanting to kill themselves are thinking rationally and are willing to go through such a process.

Just think about all the people you'd be hurting if you were to do it. That's the main thing that helped me through troubled times.

Also, make sure you don't cut the people that care about you off. You need them

Yeah I don't take any medication either. Mainly because that shite earmarks you in military records and I've got a few career goals that would be hindered if I went that route. What you're doing now is exactly what the doctor ordered, though (pardon the pun). My tonic for depression is usually playing basketball till I drop or working out in the gym like an animal. If I'm home with the wife it's usually catching up on the honey-do list or having sex if she's in the mood. Also singing--I sing when I'm in a good mood, but also when I'm stressed. God said make a joyful noise--didn't say anything about it having to sound good!

Keep it up, man. I feel you on the student loans thing too, btw. It's overwhelming sometimes.

my old roommate tried to hang himself in his closet while I was there. I heard the noise of him struggling and ran in and got him out of his make shift noose. Did CPR until he became coherent and ambulance came and took him away

I had a recent bout with depression

The idea came to my mind but I never considered it seriously

Honestly the reason why I never considered it seriously is that as an atheist I don't believe anything happens when you die...no afterlife..so I figured why waste the one time I have in this weird existence

Every now and then my body decides not to make serotonin and that will cause a severe depression. I just have to recognize what the hell is going on and get something to jump start the production for a while.

On another note, suicide is a very selfish thing to do.

I've had some pretty low times after my deployments, but nothing severe enough to make me think suicide. I've had a couple buddies commit suicide though. Pretty shitty feeling. They have all kinds of resources in the military to help, I just wish more Soldiers would take it seriously and shake the stigma that comes with getting help.

Yep, a few years ago it's just about all I thought about for about a year. Failed two classes because of it. Luckily that's in the past now, but every once in while the thought pops back up. Not nearly as severe as it once was though.

The big benefit to my plan there is to identify those with mental issues and allow them get some help.

You hear it all the time that a person that commits suicide was the happiest person, you'd never suspect a thing was wrong, we're just in shock. Well obviously they didn't feel comfortable enough sharing their feelings and what was bothering them. Putting on the happy face often is a coping mechanism done to not raise alarm or risk being ostracized.

Too often family will ignore an issue or brush warning signs aside, then Boom.

I have never thought of it. I have a friend who was really thinking about. I was haning out with him and he wanted to slit his throat. I hade a long talk with him. Missed a couple of classes but it was well worth it.

I made him go get mental help.

The main thing is stay supportive.

The closest I have got to it was when a ton of gay rumors about me started making it rounds at my school. I finally realized it was not worth fighting something stupid like that.

Know anybody that has done it?

Unfortunately I do as of this weekend. My uncle had been battling a debilitating disease and depression for the past 5 years. We don't know if it was intentional or not...surreal experience to say the least. It still hasn't sunk in yet

I have thought about suicide many times, but its been a long time.

I started treating my intermittent depression as the medical issue that it is.

I also spent about two years in therapy, working out all my shite.

Some of the best experiences I have ever had have been in pursuing personal growth, confronting my demons, etc. There's a whole subculture of personal workshops out there for anybody who is serious about dealing with their shite.

Some of the most fun I've ever had, and met many lifelong friends. Also headed off probable rehab.

Damn. What is there to be suicidal about when you are 12?
