Avoid the slots at all times. Maybe there is some truth to the "first day" theory, but there is no competition at sea, and no real incentive to toss wins.
If you can judge a shoe, then blackjack might be your bet. Don't count on many hands before a new shuffle or deck(s) come out.
If you have a "day at sea" on your itinerary, stay out of the casino, period. Do a rum or wine tasting, take tango lessons or just eat and nap.
Keep tabs on the alcohol bill, and enjoy the cruise. I'll never go on another, they are floating petri dishes.
