A new shelter is being built to protect Chernobyl in Ukraine. The construction costs over £1bn ($1.46bn/1.38bn euros) and is intended to stop radioactive material leaking, and to allow the old reactor to be dismantled safely.
A catastrophic explosion in April 1986 caused 31 deaths, and the radioactive material released spread across Europe.

And over 1000 three legged children.
But there's nothing to see here folks.
Move along, slowly, because it's hard to walk when you're a fricking human tripod.

Chernobyl is an interesting case study. Unfortunately, for the rest of the world, it happened in Russia.
The data we do have is interesting, however, we missed on some of the best data after the first 5 years or so. We wouldn't have anything if the USSR hadn't fallen.
I know that what happened has been documented, but I'd assume there's still more to the story given that it happened in Russia.

So does my camera may it RIP.
They've been building on and repairing the existing sarcophagus for way too long anyway. This is really too little too late.
What happened is what we know.
What we don't know enough about are the people this statue is dedicated to.

Yeah. Did a group tour. The way the radiation lies is terrifying. Two feet can be the difference in harmless and lethal.
I was supposed to go back, but then the revolution took off and it was slightly extremely unsafe.
My mother's family has ties to one of the Liquidator's.
Someone dropped my camera (very cheap one I got in Kiev) and it shattered. Left the whole thing on the bus. Probably could've gotten something developed, but I was rather mad.
If this thread is still with us tomorrow, I'll get into it. I'm exhausted though.

I take that as a compliment, but no, I'm not him.
He is, however, here, and so am I.
The full complement of Mizzou posters are all here now. Should be a great time on the OT during the offseason.

Except MS2. So, as you said, should be a good off season.

Stir of Echoes is, in fact, an Arkansas fan. I know him personally, plus his username is the most obvious of clues.
He's 100 percent not mogray....but mogray is here albeit in another form.

No, jackass.
I doubt anyone has been near the elephants foot. They use mirrors to this day to take pictures of it.
I was referring to the random hotspots. Like the bumper cars for instance. Lethal was an exaggeration, but harmful would be apt.

Highly recommend the site with the photos linked in the thread. It's amazing how quickly nature will overtake a town once abandoned.
