I am starting grad school next week, and I have been out of the textbook game for awhile. On Amazon, these books are adding up to over $800. What methods are you college kids using these days?

Rent.. or illegally download if you're into that kind of thing.

I use Amazon. Recently I've been just renting books on my Kindle Fire. I don't buy/use too many books though... maybe 25% of my classes. I am an undergraduate student, so things are likely different for a grad student.

I usually go through Chegg. Cheap rentals and you get access to E-Books until your book comes. Another option is to search .pdf files online.

I suggest downloading a torrent as well. Free is better and the likelihood someone knocks on your door is near non existent

I use to know about some that had textbooks, but they ask required an invitation. You might just have to roll the dice and try pirate bay, as sketchy as that is.
