Most people would be proud to call their favorite school/alma mater the best in their respective state. But others may imply that the education in said state is rather unimportant socially.

Arkansas is a pretty small state. Maybe Hendrix College ranks higher than U of Arkansas in some categories. But Arkansas is the flagship of higher education in the state, so this surprises me none.

The truth hurts. The bigger university usually gets the nod, when academics are similar throughout the state. In this case, MSU.

I would have thought that Hendrix or JBU would been scored higher than U of A. Just because of them being private and little bit more picky in admissions.

Smaller, private schools are at a disadvantage. Middlebury is the best school in Vermont according to any college advisor.

If MSU or Arkansas is the best college in a given state, that speaks very poorly of the quality of higher education in said state.

This. There are several states where small liberal arts schools would contest this list. Vermont (Middlebury), Maine (Bowdoin), Virginia (Washington & Lee), and even Massachusetts (Williams) are examples.
