Eli Thompson has an extremely rare condition known as complete congenital arhinia, said Brandi, adding that there are only about 37 cases worldwide like his. The chance of being born with congenital arhinia is one in 197 million, she said.

Besides not having an external nose, he doesn't have a nasal cavity or olfactory system. (Despite that fact, she said, he sneezes. "The first time he did it, we looked at each other and said, 'You heard that, right?'")

You're a wizard, Eli.

Docs will be able to fix him up. T&P for the little guy, those surgeries are gonna hurt.

It's a riveting story and the exciting part is it could go in any direction since he's one of a kind..

What if he becomes an actor and runs us down 18 years from now Jay and Silent Bob style?

On a scale of 1-10 for (10 being most severe) birth deformities, I'd rate Eli's at a 6.

Cosmetic surgery should easily normalize his appearance. However, having a permanent tracheal tube could lead to lifelong respiratory issues.

Here's hoping the little guy has a long and productive life.

He won't get the surgeries until he's a teenager. He will endure a lifetime of taunting before then.

God Bless ya Eli. He wouldn't be here if he didn't have a purpose. Hopefully he kicks major arse.

Weird how a name can run hand in hand with facial birth defects.

As someone who just had a baby son four months ago, this hits really close to home. His parents have a tough road ahead. I wish the little guy and his family all the best.

Hope the little guy gets the best of care. Docs can fix the nose and new tech may one day make the trach unnoticeable. Good Luck, Eli!

Is this because his body will need to be fully developed?

The thing is he has no sinuses and his skull isnt normal. Apparently his brain sits differently in his head, so what further complications that presents will be hard to know.

Also no ability to smell. Ever. Thats dangerous. No ability to smell also means highly diminished sense of taste. But at least he is cute as a baby. Hopefully docs can fix him up at least cosmetically.
