So to attempt to make a long story short I had a subidural hematoma back in 2008 from an intertubing accident and had to have two seperate brain surgeries to fix. Miraculously I made a full recovery and went on about living my life until 2015 when I started having seizures that were tied to alcohol

Neuro explained that it's not a Grand mal (sp?) seizure that are related to your body essentially going through withdrawals bc i drink too much just that they are "partial something (can't remember)" seizures that alcohol leaving my system is a stimulant for and I am prone to them due to the previous brain injury

Anyways that's not the point of my thread, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with seizure medicine and specifically Keppra?

The Neuro prescribed me the Keppra and of course said to stay away from alcohol which I have been doing but reading online seems to be a lot of side effects mentally and physically to these drugs and am just trying to figure out how prevalent they are

Keppra is one of the better tolerated anti seizure meds and works pretty well, considering.

Main ADRs are sedation and mood changes (you may be more moody and easier to piss off). They are dose related and more often seen in kids.

Hopefully he is starting you at the lower end of the dose range (500 mg twice daily or lower) and going up on the dose as needed.

Forgot to mention nausea but that's a possible ADR of most meds these days.

My 13 year old has taken keppra for about 8 years now. Never had any issues with any side affects.

She has partial complex seizures. Never been able to map one yet in the EEG.

Obviously she doesn't drink so hopefully if you stay off the alcohol the medicine will prevent your seizures.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry I haven't been able to respond, busier day than I expected

--yes I'm only taking 1,000 MG a day (one at morning then one at night)

--I've heard some of the meds are rough on the liver but doc said these aren't thankfully

--I've never had any seizure issues that weren't alcohol related. When all this started it's not that I drank THAT often but when I did drink I would drink heavily and get pretty shitfaced (probably about once a week/week and a half). So I'm hoping keeping the alcohol in check will take care of it and I can eventually come off the medicine

Been over a month since my last seizure when I had finally had enough and it's been surprisingly easy to stay in moderation so far. I recognize drinking at all is probably a bad idea but damn do I enjoy a 1-2 beers after a long day (never a situation where I had issues with drinking too much anyways)

Thanks for the help everyone I really appreciate it

My wife use to have Gran mal seizures before i married
her. Since we been married for 24 yrs. she had maybe one in her sleep when we first married. The main thing is not to get stress out, for her that was a trigger.
She takes no medicine for it.

Try and not to take life so serious is all i got for you.
