I actually think the songs are more than tolerable. They're certainly not horrible even if they have a kind of Glee feel to them as stated earlier.

PS That Twisty story was horrible, felt terrible for the guy.

But the spoiled rich kid -- I think Precious is gonna off him.

It really, really was. John Carroll Lynch absolutely nailed that role.

I really look forward to future roles with him -- because that was some solid acting. Really, for me, Twisty very nearly stole the show if not for his death.

Dandy is going to be the best antagonist in AHS history. I haven't hated a character more since Joeffrey from GoT.

I think they do a good job of mixing the new with the old!

I actually don't hate him, I feel sorry for him, just like everyone else in the series. He's got all the resources but he's directionless, purposeless. His mother was hardly there when he was younger, dad killed himself at a young age (potentially with Dandy walking in on it).

I think the only reason they hate him because he's remorseless and for the most part his insanity is hard to identify with. Twisty was way easier because he was mentally handicapped, but Dandy is plenty intelligent enough to know what he's doing is wrong, although his wealth and upbringing have disconnected him from reality since he really has never had to worry about anything.

Fascinating how his mother helps him now, though, and it sort of amplifies their bond.

Honestly I didn't really care for the Twisty backstory. The actor does a great job, no doubt. The problem is that I don't need Twisty to be a sympathetic character. He's a murderous maniac and I kinda wanted it left at that.

I really think the actor who plays Dandy is doing a good job so far too. Very interested to see where his storyline goes.

Sometimes, the best villains are those that you can sympathize with. I actually prefer for villains to have a reason to be bad, because most don't.

He's one of the few that can be spared sympathy even if he is a murderous child abductor.

I'm not gonna say the back story was imperative, but at the same time I did like it better than "oh he's just a murderous creepy clown. The end." Leaving it like that is just a little cartoonish IMHO.

If they would have made him, let's just say, a ghost (this is how I see the cartoonish angle) it would have taken away the fear from it.

Even in Sinister, I wished that it was an actual serial killer because I feel as though that could have made it a little creepier.

I think there are plenty of terrifying things in reality that we don't have to reduce the characters to monochromatic cutouts with no soul. You could see why he broke, what kind of pain he had and how he couldn't really understand what he was doing was wrong.

I thought it was fantastic writing, and actually played with the narrative of basically not attacking others and being cruel because of differences.

Yeah I can certainly respect that.

I guess the way villains are depicted in any media kinda has to be judged on a case by case basis. Sometimes the backstory adds something or moves the character in an interesting direction, and sometimes it just detracts.

Think of Anton in No Country for Old Men. Him having no story and no sympathetic side gave him a dangerous mystique that could have been ruined by fleshing out his character too much. Same with Darth Vader even, before the prequels spilled all the beans. Sometimes it works to have your villain be a pure force of nature; no "why" or anything to try to reason with.

Man, Sinister was almost cool. I enjoyed the stuff that they did with the photos and videos.. But the 'demon' being just a guy in facepaint was pretty hokey and it really took me out of it.

Supernatural style horror is a lot harder to pull off I think.

And of course I'm not saying anyone is wrong here -- in a way we're kind of all right in our own subjective ways. I think the only problem we have here is: This is far from over. There's still a full season to keep watching and so we have to wait to see what happens. From what I've heard, Twisty is supposed to make a return (this isn't a spoiler, it was acknowledged, I think) in some way.

And I know it's really goddamn hard to feel sorry for such a horrible, sadistic character -- but I feel like the writers actually achieved it.

What an amazing season so far.

Yeah it's been good so far. I only just got into AHC like three months ago and watched all of the seasons back to back. I'm a huge horror guy, but I never got into Murder House and I just never caught up until recently. So far Asylum has been my favorite so far, but I'm liking Freak Show a lot.

I think they were trying to avoid the Insidious route (possibly) with that hoof horseman thing -- so they went with something more minimalistic.

I think they had a great idea, though, because that house was spooky as frick. I think we've all lived in a place like that at one time or another.

And this is my favorite season so far, but I'm going to go rewatch them all this weekend, if I have the time.

Agreed.

And while I still very much enjoy the show, I think they may have killed him off a smidge too early.

Agreed. They could have had him in about 3 or 4 more episodes without him becoming a stale character, IMO.

Guess they didn't want to distract from Dandy's looniness, but I think those two actually shared the screen pretty well.
