We've been doing the ACT Explore assessment

I'm not really familiar with it since my time in high school they had the Graduation Exam....even though I didn't take it I was still familiar with the test and the type of questions.

Is this test similar to what the regular ACT is?

Graduation exam day was awesome. It only took us smart people an hour or two to take, and since it wasn't a timed test, they let us leave once we were done because it would take the dumb kids so long to finish it.

The middle school version is similar to the ACT but with middle school content. It's structured the same.

When the state first starting using it a few years back, it was just a supplemental assessment. It now counts as 16% of the Kentucky accountability score (which judges whether a school is audited by the state).

Yes definitely was..I think it gave a lot of people false hope or kind of misled people, because the state standards were LOW and not to the level which it should have been which is what we are seeing now with these new test scores.

And another reason why colleges/universities in the state have trouble keeping freshman from probation & suspensio...if they enrolled on probation.

Got it.

Hopefully parents will realize that this isn't acceptable, and do their part at home and demand some changes in the schools.

Most tenth graders haven't had all of the math yet that is tested on the ACT until halfway through their eleventh grade year, so there's that to think about, too.

The problem we've run into is the ones that need help, often have parents that aren't educated enough to keep up with the rigor of the content once they hit middle and high. We try to host parent nights and offer hotlines to help kids and parents. But there's only so much you can do on the education end.

The most dismal scores were at Johnson, Butler and Columbia high schools

Hmm.. I wonder what all those schools have in common?

ETA: My wife was a science teacher at Columbia and it was a complete shitshow. No accountability on the student's end. The administration sucks, and the parents were even worse. She had zero leeway on discipline of the students, and spoke openly about placement standards. Kids are taking classes they have no business taking. She went from Mountain Brook to Columbia and it was a shock, and pretty much drove her away from teaching. Needless to say, she left after one year and is now a grad student at AU.

For the uninformed yes

Common Core is an absolute step in the right direction. It holds teacher to a standard where they can't just wing shite for 30 years with tenure and get away with a school full of uneducated idiots that had to deal with poor teaching standards. The education system in this country is shite. Some states have good standards and some don't. Judging by the test scores in the link....Looks like the state of Alabama could use a complete overhaul. I mean, that is downright awful.

Yeah I'm proud Alabama is overhauling its education system...it's pretty clear that the standards were low and you could graduate not knowing jackshit.

That was the fundamental aim of common core. To set standards especially in states that weren't meeting standards. It also helps prevent the all to common, I have to transfer to another school and you go to the new school and its nothing like the school you were at. If all schools are following a similar standard you aren't completely butt fricking kids that have to move to new schools. I love that schools are finally holding teachers accountable. Not that parents shouldn't shoulder some of that blame but too many poor educators have been in the system for far to long. Posting teachers scores online for the world to see is a good thing. Getting rid of tenure is a good thing. I could go on and on but I believe all states need to adopt similar standards.

Not going to lie, this is catching me by surprise if true.
I always thought when it was built back in 2007 or so that it was just a few steps behind Grissom and Hsv High, and head and shoulders above Butler, JOJ and Lee.

I feel your pain on this. I have a Georgia education. I graduated with kids that could barely speak English. Nick Marshall graduated from the neighboring town in Wilcox county. It's a very low standard in these areas.

This is more of a society issue than that specific school. However, you need an administration with a backbone. When in reality, its a team effort. Teaching, parents, the child ....everyone is responsible for educating. The problem is, our society always points at the teacher and not at themselves or the kids. It's a shame. I put up with the same shite in coaching.
