There are some very large gators in the Noxubee Wildlife Refuge just south of Starkville. Some of them were released as juveniles in 1969, and I think the largest one died a year or so ago. It was massive, over 12 feet and 700+ pounds. Gators usually don't live long enough to get much bigger than that. I doubt a 15 foot gator exists, but there are crocs in the southern Everglades that have reached 17 feet.

Just 2 years ago Miller's Ferry/Wilcox set the state record for largest gator and again this year.

Yeah I remember the one in Noxubee dying of old age. Most gators don't make it older than 60 so I don't know where the Teddy Roosevelt and Model T comments came from. The biggest are the baddest but problem is they can't stay baddest and healthiest so time takes it's toll on them and the next baddest one comes along and ends its life. I think the Bamer game wardens are being a little "generous" with their measurements. But hey, Rawl Tahd!, Amirite?"

I doubt there are many larger than 14 feet anywhere that grew up in the wild.

We are headed to Lake George WMA tonight to start scouting locations. We will be there and Little Sunflower River tonight into tomorrow morning and the this Saturday be on Big Black and Eagle Lake areas. I will let you know what we see. Hopefully with pics.

Why does the article say they "caught" the old gator? They shot it with a gun. Now if those rednecks had wrestled it to death, I wouldn't complain.
