I didn't really know that much about this until about 8-9 months ago when I got a new coworker who is a big Afrocentrist. He is a big fan of professors like Asante at Temple, John Henrick Clarke and Psychiatrist Francis Cress Welsing.

What am I not getting here. Any validity to this school of thought? Some of it seems very Third Reichish.

Went ahead and googled it to save others the time. For some reason I thought it'd be more than it is. Sounds like simple African studies to me. Should I have a thought about it?

quote:

Afrocentrism
Afrocentrism (also Afrocentricity) is a cultural ideology or worldview mostly limited to the United States that focuses on the history of black Africans. It is a response to global (Eurocentric/Orientalist) attitudes about African people and their historical contributions and revisits their history with an African cultural and ideological focus.

I know what it is, I just didn't know it was so popular and so many people believed some of these things.

I can see it being a hobby, but there are so many competing cultures that it would seem impossible to adhere to just one.

I don't think its regular African studies. I have learned that Afrocentrism teaches that Cleopatra was black, Hannibal was black, all Egyptians were black(we know some of the later dynasties were Nubian, but not all), the Jews are really black and the people currently occupying Isreal are not the descendants of the real Jewish people, the Greeks stole their culture from Egypt, that "racism white supremacy" was genetic in nature, that white people fear genetic annihilation, ect. ect. ect.

I didn't know this was a real thing that was takin seriously in academia. In my ancient history class race was never mentioned and I don't remember talking about it.

Ha. Charlemagne was black, according to these folks.

It's the worldview of African supremacy. That sub-Saharan Africans created much of the world's culture and that it was somehow "stolen" by other peoples. They never explain how you "steal" the ability to build civilizations.

Sounds like it's important to them that a lot of people be black. That's not important to me. I would probably think their club is stupid.

Yeah I asked my coworker for some books on the subject so I could see some sort of evidence for these claims and he just directs me to YouTube channels and videos. I would like to read up on this if anyone has any books to recommend on the subject.

I don't see color when I look at people. I just see one group of colorless people.
