I think affirmative action is more about social justice than it is about attempting to impose diversity. It tries to even the playing field because some believe if there's a proverbial finish line of success, some people receive a head start while others have hurdles placed in their lane.
I would be in favor of income-based affirmative action in higher education. To me one's advantages and privileges (or conversely obstacles and hindrances) are determined by one's SES more than by one's race.
As far as the Supreme Court's decision is concerned, I have no opinion. I'm not a Con Law expert.

We should apply Affirmative Action to everything, sports included. I want to see just as many Asians playing basketball as I do blacks.

Can we end Pell Grants, too? Please?

I think affirmative action was a good idea when it was enacted, but has long since lost it's need to exist.

I want my kids to be in a diverse school which is why I'm moving my child out of her 99.99% white private school next year into a municipal school.
What are the demographics like at the municipal school? Is there a remotely comparable level of success? There are plenty of areas throughout the country where this would be academic/social suicide for your child.
Plainly and simply, Sotomayor is wrong. I would be embarrassed if I publicly admitted that the only reason I had gained acceptance to the schools I went and had been qualified for the jobs that I had was because of my gender or race.
Content of character my arse.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, the ruling didn't decide if AA would be kept or discarded but who could decide when and where it's applied.
UM is not changing its policy if I understood correctly.

I'm sending her to a good school. It's rated 10 out of 10. I've lived in this area long enough to know which schools are successful.

You're correct, Jefferson. That is what was so nutty about Sotomayor's and Ginsbirg's opinions. They essentially view it as unconstitutional for a legislature to set a policy about affirmative action. One of the wackier opinions I've seen from the court in my lifetime. Fortunately they were the only 2 to rule that way.

I remember applying for a particular state scholarship in Arkansas, and the minimum GPAs and ACT requirements were graded according to race.
Whites & Asians needed highest.
Hispanics next.
AA lowest.
I will always remember that, and I will always sort of resent it, too. #thestruggle

This quote from Sotomayor is indicative of the erosion of logic in our post-postmodern society. Making a legislative decision that there is a level playing field for all races is defined by an Ivy-league educated Supreme Court Justice as a "barrier against racial minorities."
Up is down. Freedom is slavery.

Are you implying that someone who supports affirmative action would support or be a part of a 1984-like government?
Posted on 4/23/14 at 11:40 am to Crimson G
I'm saying that the use of language in Sotomayor's statement is very 1984ish. Support of affirmative action can be argued. It cannot be argued in a logical fashion using the language she used.

What do you expect from Sotomayor? She only got her job because she is Latina. She IS an Affirmative Action hire. frick that slag.
