The puritans were strict calvinists who wanted to outlaw marriage, christmas, all kinds of stuff. Played directly against English culture and the law of the land at the time.

King James VI of England tried to make a deal with them and the Church of England at the time by forcing both to write a common bible (KJV bible). That was a success but the two groups never got along. Eventually the Puritans became a political liability and sought fresh start in the new world.
