Beat Northern Illinois 26-14.

Kind of a ho hum match IMO.

Johnston has looked solid and did again today. Mayes, as he so often does, just continues to squeak wins out, though not always impressively.

Obviously taken with a grain of salt as I'm no wrestling guru, but the only questionable call I've seen Smith make is going with Synon over Eierman. Synon loses again today. Synon is not our future. Yes, Eierman is gaining experience and keeping his redshirt but I think he's good enough to go now and definitely better than Synon.

Yup. Couple backups got some time.

125- Barlow started off stronger than usual. Didn't open it up the way I would have liked, but was in control the entire time.

133-Man, Synon is struggling. His only offense is double unders, which people have figured out and know to stay out of. Needs to turn it around.

141-Nesenberry? Never heard of him. Got destroyed though.

149-Mayes is turning into Tsirtsis. Never dominating, only winning by 1-2, no matter the opponent. That is very concerning. If he doesn't start opening up the scores, he will be prime for an upset or two at NCAA's.

157-Barnes is the feel good story of the year. Bouncing up two weights and really starting to fill out and take control. Really showing what led him to a Juco national title. Solid on his feet, but excellent tilts and top work. Has a tendency to get too high and get put on his back though. Should he play it safe on top, I can foresee a nice Mikey England-esque run at the NCAA's.

165- Lewis got the day off and Lemanowicz struggled.

174-Blaise dominated.

184-Cody Johnston filled in for Willie, who is resting his bum ankle. Johnston got the first period pin. I'd look for Willie to return vs NC State.

197-J'den got a ranked opponent, and opened up the score in the 3rd period. Not much drama, but the score was only 3-1 going into the 3rd.

285-Romero loses 6-0...which isn't getting pinned I guess.

8 out of their 14 team points came against backups. If our starters wrestle the score is likely something like 33-6.

Redshirt will do wonders for Jaydin. Its much too late to pull it now. With Lavalle redshirting also, this year was always going to be a prep/down year. Keeping Jaydin, Wisman, and Roark all together to build off of will be incredible.

Ben Askren is a perfect example to use. Ben was an incredible recruit who could have stepped into the lineup right away. He went 24-8 during his redshirt year, which is good, but borderline AA if we are being honest. Instead, he works on his game, and becomes one of the best in the country for his 4 years of competition. He was one Chris Pendelton away from being a 4-timer, and still ended up winning 2 national championships and a Hodge Trophy. If he doesn't AA his true freshman year(which he probably wouldn't have), that could have derailed his entire career.

Wrestling is so mental too, unlike any other sport. "the best" can be mentally dissected and destroyed, most recently evidenced by #1 overall recruit Chance Marstellar quitting the sport entirely.

So the mindset of a redshirt year sets up Jaydin for success, rather than the pressure of having to adapt AND perform.
