Anyone thinks Mizzou DC Steve Wilks will leave for the NFL? There is a rumor that Wilks has interviewed for the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator vacancy. That could be bad news.

Why would it be bad? The defense sucked arse.

Edit- We were 105th in total defense . A high school coach should be doing better than that.

The defense played much better the latter half of the year and this would be the second year in the system with more talent on the field.

You’d also probably have transfers as a result etc.

Losing your DC at this point would not be a good thing I would think.

Drinkwitz said he had someone in mind to replace him if he leaves for the NFL. Remember the former LSU coach that Drinkwitz added to the coaching staff not too long ago?
"Eli Drinkwitz could promote his newly hired safeties coach who just happens to have Power 5 coordinator experience. Blake Baker, who came to Mizzou after one year as Louisiana State's linebackers coach, served as Miami's defensive coordinator from 2019-20 and before that held the same role at Louisiana Tech from 2015-18. Baker and Drinkwitz coached together at Arkansas State in 2013."

Yes they were better in the 2nd half of the season but why would an NFL want to pay millions for these results? I DGAF about the NFL but this is ludicrous even for them.

NFL loves retreads even more than the SEC.

I think Wilks may have been an experiment to see if having an NFL coach on staff would be attractive to recruits.

If,as I suspect, it makes no difference, then Drink would be happy to replace him with a young, aggressive recruiter.

Let Wilks go, call Samples, everyone kisses and makes up, and now we own St.Louis in recruiting.

We averaged 327 Yards per game the last 4 games, good enough for 14th in the nation over average YPG.

What talent level?

The DL was below average and the LBs sucked out loud.

The DB room was good enough, but that was not a talented defense.

I know the NFL loves their retreads, but I can't see Wilks getting an NFL DC job this offseason after the D put up the stats they did this past season. I like the direction the defense was headed in the 2nd half of the year though. I, for one, would like to see what Wilks can do in 2022 as our DC

Yeah he interviewed - I doubt he gets it though.

For what it’s worth I think our Defense would be significantly hurt by his departure. Transfers galore in the face of uncertainty.

On the flip side - if he stays then next years defensive recruiting has a real shot to be lethal

Our talent should have easily been in the 60-70 range nationally.
