Looks like yall have a few guys in some high level competition doing well in summer baseball.

Tanner Houck has two appearances for Team USA with 7 Ks in 8.2 IP. 3.12 ERA and 1 BB.

Ryan Howard is hitting .333 in 24 ABs for Team USA. He's started all but one game for them.

Bryce Montez De Oca is throwing in the Cape Cod league. He's got 13 Ks in 14.1 innings (2 starts) and a 2.51 ERA. Downside is that he's also got 13 BB. If he can get his control down, he's going to be a weapon. If he doesn't, he'll be one of those guys that gets drafted based on talent and then explodes in the minors when he can get consistent innings to work on control.

As I find more guys and what they're doing, I'll add them to the thread.

Thanks for that ProjectP. I think Benes is playing in the Cape Cod league as well. Don't think anyone else is playing there. At least can't think of anyone off the top of my head.

Austin Tribby is there (Cape league) as well. Good ERA, K/BB same as Montez De Oca though. LINK

Brett Bond is in a local Missouri league, kind of surprised he's not in the Cape, Perfect Game, or Northwoods League. LINK

Jack Klages in New England - LINK

Shane Benes in Cape Cod - LINK

Benes came out on fire from his rehab and has absolutely struggled since.

Here is some quotes on Montez De Oca from D1Baseball. I only quoted one paragraph because it's behind a paywall.

quote:

In his most recent outing against a dangerous Orleans lineup, the Kansas native came out of the gate firing, working at 95-97 mph with his fastball in the first inning. He ended up carrying that for the most part, occasionally dipping to 94 mph or 93 mph. When he got ahead in counts, he showed that he could elevate and completely overwhelm even plus bat speed type hitters with his fastball. The problem is, however, is that Montes de Oca will have to refine and repeat his delivery enough to be able to consistently locate his exploding fastball.

This is a huge summer for De Oca. TJ will not play him if he has control issues, even though I'd at least start him in mid week games because he gives you a better chance at least than other options. If he can figure out his control issues, he potentially has more up side than Houck or at least would be a solid Saturday pitcher.

It’s no secret that Bryce Montes de Oca (Missouri) has one of the most gifted arms in the country. A 14th-round draft pick in 2014 by the Chicago White Sox, it was well known that the towering righty would be a tough sign out of high school, given his indications that he wanted to attend Missouri and that he was coming off of Tommy John surgery.

Montes de Oca did indeed end up Missouri, and the best way to put it would be that his freshman season in 2015 was a learning experience. And, that’s precisely what this summer pitching for Falmouth will be as well. The 6-foot-8 righty has 13 walks in his first 14.1 innings on the Cape, but to say the potential for him is massive would be an understatement.

More again behind a pay wall.

That's what I'd like to see lsu do with Godfrey, who is very similar to de oca. Start in the mid week to load up on innings and figure out control, the hopefully by the end of the season you have a very effective post season weapon or a weekend starter for the next season.

It's a minor league mentality so it's understandable that college coaches don't want to give guys with control issues a lot of innings. College coaches have to win games to keep their jobs. Minor league coaches have to develop talent.

I hear ya. It's kind of a catch 22 because these guys won't develop control without the innings. One of the reasons these summers are so important. But the catch for TJ is that he has less margin for error than say an LSU. For example, had he developed de Oca during the season (we lost our mid week games anyways) then maybe come the end of the year or even in the SEC tournament, maybe we would have had another weapon available and maybe would have made the NCAA tournament. Really just needed 1 more game somewhere along the line.

On another note, I really wish the metro collegiate league here wasn't so down. Used to enjoy watching some of those games. Lester played in it last summer (or was it the summer before? I'm getting old) and I got to watch him play a few times last summer.

A little OT but Mizzou baseball related.

Cubs have signed 9 of their 10 picks. They are currently sitting under slot, barely, by $36,400. The only one not signed? Mizzou commit and 3rd round pick, Bryan Hudson, the nasty left hander from Alton. His slot value is $731,000, meaning the Cubbies could offer him up to $767,400 without paying a fine. The Cubs total bonus pool was $7,236,100. They can exceed that amount by up to 5% and be assessed a 75% "tax" on any such amount but won't lose a draft pick. Above 5%, you lose a 1st round pick next year and it gets harsher from there. Realistically, the Cubs could throw an additional $361,805 and pay the 75% tax, which would make the total possible offer to Hudson $1,129,205. I'd be shocked if the Cubs did this but it is curious to know if Hudson had a magic number of $1,000,000 in the back of his head.

Not much, but still some hope I suppose. He could really make this class.

Meh. All hope out the window. Read he signed for $1.1 million. At least he cost the Cubs more than that.

Howard now hitting .353 and Houck lowered his ERA to 2.16 and leads the team in innings pitched and strike outs.

D1 Baseball:

quote:

Shortstop Ryan Howard (Missouri) is the kind of player who grows on you the more you watch him. He isn’t flashy, and he doesn’t have a ton of quickness, but he is a heady player who has provided consistent defense for Team USA at a premium position where the college class is suddenly thin, now that the great crop of 2015 shortstops have moved on to pro ball. Team USA coach Ed Blankmeyer used the word “steady” to describe Howard, and that certainly fits. He played mostly third base as a freshman, and now he finds himself as the starting shortstop for the Collegiate National Team. This summer has helped put him on the map on the national stage.

ETA:
Different article, same site:
quote:

Shortstop Ryan Howard has continued to play well for Team USA. He went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs on Saturday and then had two more hits on Monday. He has shown a knack for putting the ball in play and using all fields, helping him boost his summer average to .353, third-best on the team.

I knew he was going to sign. One of the team leaders in my dept at work is a family friend of his.

I was hoping he wanted over slot and I was hoping the Cubs wouldn't be willing to pay it.

Besides the others we've talked about, it looks like Harris is having a good summer too.

Article on the guys playing in the Cape Cod league. At least according to his Cape Cod coach, it sounds like De Oca has gotten command of his pitches. That would absolutely be huge if he does and can be the third weekend starter.
