My issue is the talent isn't there at CB/S.

Our WR talent was pretty apparent, it just needed to mature. Most of the guys in the current CB rotation have been in the program for years, now will this "new scheme" finally meld into a cohesive unit? That we'll find out, but Gibson was an average CB last year and appeared light-years ahead of everyone else on the depth chart.

That's not really accurate
ACY and Holmes are sophomores and showed good signs last season.
Alton is a redshirt freshman, but missed camp last fall waiting on the NCAA to clear eligibility.
Sparks is a true freshman
Stribling and Cheadle are the only potential rotation players that have years in the program. Cheadle is a good zone defense guy, but not someone we want playing lots of man coverage.

Safety is similar, it sounds like the starters will be Sherrils and Ulmer. With Perkins and Hilton as backups.
Sherrils was pretty good 2 seasons ago, he blamed last years struggles on the scheme.

The talent may not be there, but it's also not super experienced.

Well I said rotation, I don't expect Alton or Sparks to play this season.

When you have a Freshman starting over Juniors and Seniors that tells me all I need to know about the talent we have.

Stribling, Cheadle, and Sherrils need to earn their stripes this year, or we're screwed, it's that simple. I just don't see the talent there from watching them the last 2 years.

Sherrills is super talented.

Cheadle and Stribling I agree with.

I feel better about the safeties than the corners.

Still think they should move Hilton if Ulmer has really made that much of an impression

According to the coaches this week Alton will be in the rotation. Sparks will play as well. That might be more special teams.

This coaching staff really only has 1.5 recruiting classes, so if there's a talent issue with the older players. It's not really on them.

It's funny that a year ago there was a lot of speculation on Sherrils going to the NFL early, now he's terrible?

That's not even mentioning Wilson, who is a Senior.

Whoever has been recruiting DBs the last 4 years or so has been doing a shite job, let's be honest.

I never saw the Sherrills hype, even when he was splitting time with Simon and Browning he always looked lost and in the wrong place.

I wish I had a better opinion of this secondary, but I just don't see how we aren't getting roasted on the back end this year. Throw in that we have 3 star Freshmen playing impactful roles who are going to make mistakes and it really screams talent deficiency.

I think it's more a change in coaching philosophy. GP played the older more safe players.
BO hasn't done that. I will wait until is actually see Ulmer play before making a judgement. His is a bigger safety than Mizzou used under GP as well.

Sherrils was the starting SS in 2015 took primary reps over Thomas Wilson. Ian Simon was the starting FS. Browning was never on the two deep and didnt play at all the last month of the season.

Sherrils was one of the best safeties in the SEC in 2015. He cleaned up everything that Brothers and Scherer didn't get.. His play was a major reason MU only allowed 132 plays over 10 yds. They are basing the defense out of the same scheme they ran in 2015. With familiar keys and better play at the first and second level, you dont think these guys will be better? They won't be confused with the 85 Bears but they won't have to if MU can score 30+ a game.

Yea this defense won't be a top 20 defense, but if it finishes in the 60-80 range Mizzou should win 7-8 games.

I think they have to be around 25 PPG in scoring defense to win 8 games. That is a middle of the pack SEC defense most years. Getting the RZ TD% back below 60% will go a long way to making that happen.
