RockM - Should we suffer another year of Cuonzo ball?

However the author, as usual, fails to provide any solution beyond Kim English ...

Sure Kim was a Tiger and he may become a great coach someday but his tenure is too short to even think about giving him the gig right now.

Throw $1-1.5 MIL/year (with incentives) at Matt McMahon (Murray State - $400K/year) and get it done before May.

Yeah, mid-major coach but dude can develop talent (Ja Maront, anyone) and can flat out coach (Racers record under his tenure: 123-64).

Get it done ...

You dont have to have the solution to know the current situation can't continue.

That Wyoming coach looks really good right now.

I like that Niko Medved at Colorado State. Has turned around multiple programs.

Yes but can they develop character? What is it they say...”character wins championships”?? I mean you have to choose to recruit character or talent right, athletes can’t have both right????

This dude always talking about his rough upbringing and I’m sure it was, but that can only take you so far in college athletics. So many of the athletes playing at this level have been lifted from difficult upbringing simply because of the daily structure being an athlete requires. Character is an expectation of these athletes well before they ever get to the collegiate level, and many if not the vast majority are already set on a different trajectory because of their commitment to athletics. If Cuonzo is so passionate about developing young men, he needs to find an organization that needs his type of guidance and mentorship (boys and girls club, YMCA, any major city youth development programs), not NCAA athletics where most of these kids have fought and earned a level of character that comes with the level of commitment and dedication it takes to be a college athlete.

I think we all agree Cuonzo is a good man, but we have to admit boys and girls clubs don’t pay volunteers $3MM/year, meaning despite the talk, Cuonzo is here for the money just like the rest of us would be, and the university admin needs to recognize what they have and fix it. He’s set for life now, I would challenge Cuonzo to truly live his words and get back to the inner city and work to provide different paths for the thousand and thousands of other kids who are not athletically gifted enough to have sport as a way to build and develop their character.

That’s not really true. Any mid major type moving up is a gamble and you’re betting on what they COULD BE.

How about getting a big time coach and spend a little dough instead always going on the cheap..you can't compete in SEC with mid major coaches look at all the mid majors that crashed when hit the big time..watching Martins press conferences..he so pretentious it makes me want to throw up

To be fair, we kinda thought we were doing that last time. Cuonzo got top 20 money to come here.

This is 100% accurate.

If they want to spend money and don't care about character and want to go this route again ... throw $5 MIL a year at Petino, Iona.

I'd still target McMahon or Colorado state or other suggestions here.

That is true even if you hire a proven winner. Not every winning coach can win at every school. It has to be the right fit. Put a great coach with the wrong school and you will not win. I think the list of coaches that could win anywhere is so incredibly short. I'd guess maybe Roy Williams, Calipari and....um.....maybe bill self?

Our main problem is that, for many years, we've had an athletic department which was quite comfortable being middle-of-the-pack (or lower).

Until we have an AD who demands excellence in all sports, we're stuck being the Iowa States of the world.

The AD brass has to decide whether we want to be also-rans forever...or contenders. Frankly, I'm tired of being a laughing stock.

we have paid both our Bball and Football coaches top 20 money. We have always been generous with upping contracts for successful coaches. What Mizzou is willing to pay is not a problem.

Sampson, Medved or Pitino I'd be on board with. Doubt Sampson would levae though as he's got a good thing going and Houston can pay him. Medved can flat out coach. Can he recruit to Mizzou? ALways a risk with mid major coaches IMO with no real ties. Pitino would be a quick fix/band-aid and perhaps that's not such a bad thing with where the program is at right now. Guy wins and is a legend, despite having quite the questionable moral history. He's also just doing what every other blue blood was doing. Nobody will like this, but Ford coupled with Cory Tate have the inside track on local players. Not a fan of Ford though. I think his teams tend to underperform. SLU is fun to watch right now though.

My current interview list would include Pitino, Medved, Jeff Linder and Chris Mack.

Would love to get Pitino and an assistant who could follow him. The latter needn’t be a condition of hiring though.

We will not be hiring Pitino. Nor will we interview him. M-I-Z
