Once the QB was hurt and the backup started hitting short passes, they changed the game plan. They also didn't have very many third down conversions, you know why? Because they had so many 1st and 2nd down conversions, that's how they moved the ball and scored. See how misleading stats can be.

Ray might be a good LB in a 3-4, like Aldon Smith, but people who think he's ready to play DE in a 4-3 in the pro's are the same one's who think Sam was a shoe in. Maybe he'll get better, but right now he's far too limited, basically he's a pass rusher and not much else.

His trademark? The winningest coach in Mizzou history? Not many, and fewer than any other coach other than Devine, but don't let the facts get in the way of your pessimism.

His trademark and his legacy will be that he developed kids, ran a clean program and won a ton more than he lost, taking the school to heights never seen, or certainly not since Devine.

Damn dude it was just a question. I even said I wasn't ready to get rid of Mauk at all. I'm just curious about this other QB who I've heard is supposed to be good, but I've never seen. I'm wondering if we will see him get some playing time this year or if I will be seeing him transfer at the end of the year.

you really like rolling out this "greatest of all time" schtik dont you.. he's also got a lot of losses, close to the top in that category as well, being the Cy Young of coaches just means you haven't been fired.

Of all those wins, not many Conference Champ trophy's huh..

What we're talking about is winning something meaningful, not beating up FCS schools, Iowa St or Kentucky.

Right now we see a team/game riddled with mistakes to go along with talented plays, it's fortunate we don't have to start the year vs a team that's playing far better, like Aggie or UGa,, since they will have athletes as good as Mizzou.

Great post Jagd. Most of those wins were against teams he was supposed to beat and he's lost many games that he shouldn't have. He's won very few big games and the ones he managed to win turned out to be not so big later in the season. His blind loyalty to crony's has prevented him from reaching the next level and that's what I will remember him for. A good coach who could have been great but could never get out of his own way. He's a very stubborn man.

Jagd...on one hand I agree with you. I want to win something meaningful. More than a division. And I think it's ok for a fanbase to always demand more. Win one national championship, demand a second.

But at the same time, it's only fair to recognize the accomplishments, especially considering where the program has come from in my lifetime. Winning the SEC east is no small feat, especially in just the 2nd year in the SEC. Making bowl games year in, year out, is no small feat and hasn't always been the norm.

Always demand more but also recognize the accomplishments. That's my take.

I used to accept who we were until I saw Baylor,Okie State, and k-state pass us by, if they can do it we should be able to do it. That's when my expectations for mizzou grew greater. It's frustrating watching those 3 schools do what we should be doing.

Why are you so negative? I personally think being a Mizzou football fan has been great for the last decade. Our team played in the SEC championship game in the 2nd year! Yes we haven't reached the ultimate summit yet, but football in MO is as relevant as it's been since the 60s. I'm enjoying the ride.

I love how you ignore the specific things I cited which are true, (total wins and more importantly, 2nd best winning percentage) and instead try to put words in my mouth. I never said he was the "greatest of all time."

There is an enormous space between saying his "trademark" is letting games get away by losing them to "greatest of all time."

I've lived through the Onofrio years forward till now, and I can tell you it was not this good. You have to go back to the sixties to even find someone comparable to him with Devine.

HCGP is not perfect but he is far from bad, and he restored the program back to relevancy from a lot of years of futility (since 1970).

I want the program to take the next step also and win a national championship, but my gosh, give the man and the program some respect. We just won the SEC East in our second year and finished 5th on the country.

So you claim to remember the Onofrio years do you, well there's a coach who can claim some signature wins, you know like Notre Dame, Alabama, tOSU and USC. Since he didn't have the luxury of going to a bowl game with a 6 win team, he might not have the number of wins but he played the competition well and produced some good NFL players too.

I love all the cherry picking "we won X number of games in Y years" that the fan boy crew will exhort to along with Gary, it always makes his bowl trophies seem at least a little meaningful. "Well we have more first round draft picks in 5 years than just about anybody", that's great Gary, why haven't you managed to win more than one big game with all those players?

As TBTB points out, there are plenty of good programs that have come out of relative obscurity with the right coaching, so Pinkel hasn't pulled off some never before seen miracle. It's funny people like you worry so much about "his respect" from Tiger fans, why don't you head over to the rant and demand the rest of the SEC show more respect? Maybe because you know they'll laugh your clown azz off the website. huh

As I stated above the negativity stemmed from watching previous doormats like K-State,Baylor, and Okie Lite winning conference championships and going to BCS Bowls while Pinkel continues to sit on the ball and cost us games. Heck Kansas even won the Orange Bowl in 2007. It's ridiculous that we continue to come up short when schools with less resources achieve more. Those 3 schools have to compete with fellow in state d-1 schools, mizzou doesn't, its criminal that we have nothing to show for it.

So what do you propose be done, short and long-term?

I respect your opinions and contributions to the board and would like to know.

Here's my take... Has Pinkel been a poor big game coach? For the most part, yes. Do I have concerns that he's still not completely up to speed at an SEC level in scheme/coaching and recruiting? Yes and yes. For instance, I think we're still too undersized, overall, and I'd be recruiting the shite out of Illinois like Kentucky is in Ohio. System or not, we need to elevate our national ranking to truly compete consistently.

All that said, do I think he's accomplished good things at Missouri? Unquestionably. The program was dead in the water when he arrived. Comatose. And in the span of his tenure we've played multiple games with National championship implications on the line. Not to mention moving to a conference where Mizzou can continue to be in that conversation if they achieve. Lots of coaches and fan bases would take that and possibilities for more.

Do certain things Pinkel does frustrate me? Yes. Would I have fired Dave Steckel after the Auburn embarrassment (on the heels of the similar Navy embarrassment)? Possibly. Do I think Pinkel will ever get us over the hump? Not likely.

But in my mind, his flaws not withstanding, Pinkel has established a floor from which to build. So my pragmatic hope is the coach after Pinkel can put the finish on the base he's established.

I really would like to hear what you see as the solutions, short and long-term.

Exactly, MIZZOU is the only big D1 school in the state and should be way ahead of K State, uh wait they have Snyder.

Quit being so fricking negative. We might be good, we might not be good.
I guess I'm saying, quit being the same old stupid arse Mizzou fans.

Did he really look that bad? I shamefully had to miss a good portion of the game because I was moving this weekend.

Or is this good ol' Mizzou negativity? I've missed it.

13 years under GP:
2001 4–7
2002 5–7
2003 8–5 Independence
2004 5–6
2005 7–5 Independence
2006 8–5 Sun
2007 12–2 Cotton 4
2008 10–4 Alamo 19
2009 8–5 Texas
2010 10–3 Insight 18
2011 8–5 Independence
2012 5–7
2013 12-2 Cotton 5

The 13 years before GP:
1988 3–7–1
1989 2–9
1990 4–7
1991 3–7–1
1992 3–8
1993 3–7–1
1994 3–8–1
1995 3–8
1996 5–6
1997 7–5 Holiday 23
1998 8–4 Insight.com 21
1999 4–7
2000 3–8

9 of 13 years under GP were winning seasons. 2 of the 13 immediately preceding years were. 8 bowls under GP while only 2 bowls in the previous 2 years. 2 top 25 years (barely) before GP. 4 under GP with 2 top 5 finishes. During most of the prior 13 years it would take 4 years to get to the number of wins that we had just last year. Like I said before...it's ok to always push for more or to be better, but some context of what GP has accomplished is important.
