@DavidCMorrison: Pinkel: "The linebacking corps and corners and safeties might be the best athletic group since we've been here."

I have been saying people have been underestimating our secondary. We are going to be really good back there.

I hope he's not judging the secondary off the receivers

No way. 3 are proven and proven to be solid. Dennis and Penton are studs. Simon is a known quantity at safety. Sherrils, while an unknown, has the potential to be special. The kid is fast and not afraid to just lay someone out. He proved that on ST last year.

Pinkel is great at finding the right players to fit into his defensive schemes. Y'all should be fairly tough in that regard this year.

I watched Sherrils very closely last year. FAST! TOUGH! And like my bro above stated, "...lay someone out.". His future is very bright. Watch his stock rise.

Sherrils is a stud in the making, no doubt. Guy looks like a LB and runs like a CB. Not to mention he flat out brings the lumber when he hits.

First guy I've ever seen get kicked out of a game for hitting someone too hard.

The targeting rule is a perfect example of something done for the right reasons, and with the best of intentions, that turns into a FUBAR cluster.

It used to be before there was continuity of personnel under Pinkel, you had to listen carefully to his interviews to get a feel about how that year's team was shaping up. Pinkel is no smoke blower, nor is he wrong in his assessments. Now, most of us have a pretty good idea already, and he's just putting a fine point to it.

The strength of the LBs and DBs couldn't come at a better time with all the DE talent we've put in the league. IMO, the DEs are still a year away. The DTs will be really good, just like the rest of the defense. I expect the O-line will be better, Mauk somewhat improved, the TEs solid and the running backs good.

Now, about all our young WR talent, I still have no firm idea yet except for the fact that they have great potential, raw speed and our coaches have proven they can develop them. I look for that unit to be better in 2016 as well. 2015 is the question.

Any big hit on a defenseless player is somehow "targeting", even though it was obvious Sherrils wasn't trying to hurt the guy.It was a clean hit all the way.

I remember Mauk saying that this is the most talented and athletic group of receivers since he's been here. I do know that they are young and raw.

And he's got the right DC to exploit the strength.

Yup. With a great 2ndary, Odom can get creative with the blitzing and bring the pain.

I'm not a huge fan of college teams frequently blitzing. It creates a huge empty space that can be exploited by a dump-off pass. In most of our games, we'll be good enough to not have to blitz. If it's a time or to, so be it. If we aren't getting to the quarterback against better teams, ity could be problematic. Better teams will have better offensive lines that can pick up those blitzes. It becomes very risky proposition if it's attempted too often.

According to Odom, he played a 3-4 at Memphis because he had to. It was a personnel/talent issue because of a lack of defensive linemen. Except for the Auburn game, which was a disaster, we haven't played anything but a 4-3 as our base defense, only throwing in different looks at times to trick offenses.

Get blitz happy and get burned.
