Coaches fix things. Dan cannot be happy with how things have transpired, and I imagine that he is going to work to fix it. He has, at the very least, earned the opportunity to fix it.
Allyn McKeen was asked to step down after going 4-4-1. He never had a losing record at MSU. We went 0-8-1 the next year after McKeen and entered a pretty dark period.
What coach are you going to get after Dan? People are going to go, "Win 19 at MSU in 2 years, and the fans want you fired because 5 or 6 18 year old kids want to play elsewhere. Thanks, but no thanks."

During that month Bama won the SECCG, Heisman, playoff semifinal, and national championship game. There really isn't a whole lot of recruiting-speak that can overcome that type of publicity, particularly through the eyes and ears of a high school kid when Saban picks up the phone and calls.

I'm appreciative of what he's done, but at some point you're either with us or against us. Did Allyn McKeen all but take another job to see it filled by another coach that got fired and have to stay in Starkville? Mullen thought he was all but gone until Richt got fired from UGA.
