Had no idea he was a twenty year old incoming true frosh. That honestly puts him ~2 years ahead of the regular pace for even elite olinemen in terms of weight training which is really a big deal for olinemen since they are severely limited during the season and must use offseasons to build strength. THAT alone should be a big boost to him and y'all as he mans on of the OT spots.

That said, speed of the game and technique make it hard for even true freshman like him even though he should be able to rely on brute strength against many DEs.

Question: How did he get so much older?

'Nother one: I know y'all are high on Ivey but given the probs with the rest of the line + inexperience (especially in your earlier games) what's your honest opinion about how much he can accomplish? (And yes I realize the sky is limit for him in the future).

Hate it but I think he'll be a bauce later on for y'all and maybe later in the season.

TIA.

One of our real problems with the OL has been injuries and lack of depth. If our OL can avoid injuries we can field a decent unit.

True frosh OL always have learning curves to master, but as the saying goes "cream rises to the top".

I'm less optimistic than you are regarding your OL situation but perhaps more optimistic about Ivey showing out this year. It's just hard to replace that much OL no matter how good and the more new players the harder it is. Gelling matters on the OL. Add in injuries and depth woes and overall I think y'all are in for an uphill climb with that pos. group BUT I could be very wrong.

That said, I expect big things from Ivey no later than mid or late year. He's too talented and will get all the snaps he wants for that not to happen.

JMO. And thanks for your honest opinion.

UF's OL situation in a nutshell, updated after recent acquisitions:

OT David Sharpe, SO, 6'6, 350 will be starting at LT. He played in 6 games last year so he isn't completely green. He is big and athletic, and could be a dominant LT for Florida. Having a big strong guy like that on the line, is just huge for a team like Florida that has OL issues. He must stay healthy all year.

OG Antonio Riles. RS SO, 6'4, 312, will be the probable starter at LG. He was converted from the DL as a freshman, and played in 4 games at OG last year. So he isn't completely green. He has the look of being another solid OL at Florida.

OC Trip Thurman, RS SR, 6'5, 310, has played in 27 games and started 10 and will start at Center. Although no one will ever call him an All American or anything like that, he is a solid SEC player and will hold things together for Florida at center. He absolutely needs to stay healthy.

OG Andrew Mike, RS Fr, 6'6, 302, or OG Travaris Dorsey, RS FR, 6'2, 323 will start at RG. Both are athletic and although they lack experience, should be serviceable at either guard position if needed.

OT Mason Halter, RS SR, 6'8, 297 - will play RT. He is a graduate transfer from Fordham. You can read about him here linky. He was a 2 time FCS all american at Fordham and should help UF right away with his toughness and experience at tackle.

That leaves Martez Ivey as probably the primary back up at tackle, and Kavaris Harkelss RS FR, 6'5, 292, and Cam Dillard RS SO, 6'4, 309 as the other OL back ups.

If any of the other true freshmen contribute, that would be a bonus.

If UF lands the other transfer OL that is out there that is choosing between OU and UF, that would just be an added bonus.

The line situation is not nearly as bad as some are making it out to be. It's not good, but it's not a disaster with walk-ons starting. All of these guys were at minimum 3 star recruits. Sharpe was a high 4* and Ivey was obviously a 5* #1 OT in the country.
