I’m overall optimistic about the depth of most positions in year 2, especially on defense.
Defensive line still worries me a bit.
But QB will be the biggest issue.

I feel sorry for anybody that made the trip to Gainesville on a Thursday night for that.

If the defense improves as much as I think it will McCall would have gave us a chance at a 9-3 record I think. Defense would have to be lights out to be 8-4 now and 6-6 or 7-5 is much more likely.

Not sure on depth with Watson's weight issue but Jackson and Banks looked pretty good out there like true SEC DTs.

They looked good going against an OL with multiple projected starters out, so hard to really judge both LOS on that.
And we just saw the DL look like an absolute mess last year, so I'm gonna believe it when I see it when the season starts.

My thoughts on spring game, take them or leave them.
UF should never, ever play another game on Thursday night.
that is when junior high teams play and although last night had some junior high, level play, big time football teams play on Saturday.
Special team, not special at all. Last year this was a problem and last night showed no improvement. If we are going to play close games due to having a defense that keeps us in games and a pedestrian offense, we need to able to make field goals and flip the field with punts and coverage or we will lose a lot of these close games. There needs to be a Special Teams coach that is responsible. If everyone is responsible, nobody is.
Defense, lots of enthusiasm, played hard. D line looks strong, (against an O - line that I will discuss later) Coverage was better than last year, not as many blown assignments (against a passing attack that I will discuss later) tackled better. I didn't see much from the line backers. Defense has the potential to be much improved. (against an offense that I'm about to discuss)
Offense, it was offensive to watch. O line, hopefully injuries was a big part of their poor performance. QBs ran for their lives most every pass play. Running backs broke tackles at the line and made some plays despite poor blocking. Tight ends looked good when used. Wide receivers looked good. Running backs are the strength of this offense. QBs, I will try to be gentle; they suck!
Late on throws, poor decision making, slow, inaccurate.
Play calling is high school level, and I don't mean 6A level. How many receiver screens are we going to run over a 2 year period to figure out that they don't work? Why do we run so many 2 receiver patterns? Why are we in a shot gun formation on 3rd or 4th and 1? Particularly when we have a center that can't make a decent shotgun snap. No imagination in the play calling. If we were the biggest baddest team with the biggest baddest players on the field this offense might work, but to win in the SEC with the talent we have and are competing against, this has to change. I am getting really concerned.
In summary, we looked like a team with a 7-5, 6-6 ceiling. And I am known as a 'homer' who never expects to lose. Go Gators.
I case you didn't get my vibe, I wasn't impressed.

We're not going to make a bowl game.

I knew before I came in here what to expect lol
Mertz hit 62% with a 8 yard average while throwing for 244 yards with a td under that kind of pressure and he “ain’t it” lmao
Sorry, guys. No picks like ya’ll wanted
Had the Offense lit up the defense youd all be ready to fire Armstrong
And I’ll bet 2 yrs from now when Lagway hits half those numbers ya’ll gonna be on your knees praising his play. Smh

lol..Everyone is laughing about how bad our QB play looked but no picks. Just like Miller in the bowl game who was terrible but the defense didnt make the picks. Miller is terrible under pressure and Mertz is no better than what he showed at WI. He didnt improve. We are looking at another joke 6-6 record if we dont find another QB - despite having more overall talent than probably 9 of the 12 teams we play this year.

Lmao
Must be a sad existence to look for shite to cry over. Had Mertz lit up the defense you’d be crying we have another yr of bad defense coming up n will be lucky to win at all.

Our DC was going against our position coaches calling the offense with 1 starting OL from last season n ppl expected the Fun N Gun
I can’t even with some of ya’ll lmao

I am one of the most positive fans on this board, but I know bad football when I see it. I hope like hell Napier can fix some of the issues before next season or it will be a long year.

Coach and both QBs said the same thing, very limited playbook being called by assistant coaches vs a new blitz / pressure heavy DC with his full complement of new players vs our young OL with only 1 starter.
Again, what did you expect?
After 15 practices Mertz hit 62% for 244 with a td. Possibly 2 if payday doesn’t fumble in the RZ after a big play.
Like I said, the ppl complaining now would be complaining had it gone the other way, against the defense.

Basically a lose lose situation. Offense didn't look great, but no need to burn the place down since it was against our own team. Game 1 against a real opponent, then maybe some of the vitriol is warranted.
I remember watching spring game last year and AR looked somewhat impressive...even Spurrier was admiring him during an interview.
We all know how that turned out..

I already said the OL had 4/5 projected starters out
I'm not even talking about Mertz stats - hell I was critical of AR on here all last year, and it was pointless talking about it.
I'm talking his feel for the game, ball placement, command, etc...
Based on what I saw in the Spring game, I am skeptical that he can provide us with adequate QB play this year - having said that, like I said, I'm gonna wait to judge it completely until the season starts when the full roster is there.

If we had sense we would add a Masters in underwater basket weaving or whatever McCall is majoring in and make him a nice offer but knowing UF in recent years I doubt it happens. More likely if he does transfer Auburn will go get him probably.

On another issue we will have to wait for the real games but I still feel Armstrong is an upgrade over our DC that departed. I didnt like how lost our DBs (even good ones like Marshall) were many times in our zone coverages. Hopefully we can at least move up into a top 50 defense from the #100 or so defense we had this past season.
