He said some pretty interesting stuff to say last night about the overall state of the program. Acutally went off on some rants and tangents and sounded a little bummed. Which is usually out of character for him. To people that didnt hear it, all I can really say is, is that he was extremely negative about the UAA and some coaches names that are being thrown out. He is usually a big sunshine pumper but last night was just something else.

He, like most others that are close to the program, really like Muschamp.

I know all that. I am not even talking about how he feels about Muschamp. I am talking about the stuff he was saying about Foley and the president and the boosters.

You think his feelings for WM were influencing what he was saying?

I didn't get a chance to listen. Provide some details.

Dont shoot the messenger here.

I will type this as accurately as I can recall and if I can find a podcast to it, I will link it.

Here is what went down on the show last night. Ackerman was setting up questions for him and he went off on some rants and got a little hostile a few times when it came to why Florida is recruting so bad. A large part of the show was about how a homerun hire is needed to salvage the recruting class and how when you decide to make a change at headcoach you are pretty much sacrificing the current class to get the right guy. I will provide the questions and type out his responses.

Q: Is Florida still a top 5 job?

Shane: Knowing what I know about the program which includes the facilities, the football dorms, high school coaches around the state, Bernie Machen even though he is retiring and knowing how cheap the administration is with the money when it comes to hiring a coach. Its not a top 5 job imo. Top 15 at the most, we have top 5 expectations but hand out top 25 pay. If you look at the great coaches at the small schools they are already making 3.5 to 5 million dollars and are in a comfortable situation. If it was me personally and I was making 2.5 to 3.5 million at a place lie Memphis, winning 10 games a year and was universally loved and UF came calling and was only offering me a million more then I make now, I wouldnt take the job.

Q: Why is Florida so bad on the recruting trail right now.

Shane: Well alot of it this year is kids are waiting to see what happens with the coaching staff. Alot of it though is our facilities are middle of the pack at best and our football dorms are terrible. I coach highschool kids and I will tell you the three things that they care about the most when it comes to recruting. 1. Facilities and amenities 2. Winning 3. Playing time and thats pretty much it. They dont care about tradition and history, they live in the present and when they see the facilities and the amenities that tells them what the program thinks about the players. And at the current moment we have outdated facilities, terrible football dorms, and were not winning. If we had facilities like Alabama, A&M, Oregon, and Tennessee we would have the #1 class in the country every year and a bad class for us would be like 10th. The days of kids commiting to Florida just because we are Florida is over. Any highschool headcoach would tell you this.

Q: Who do you want as the next coach?

Shane: Honestly I would like to see Spurrier comeback and give it a 5 year run only if he can get Kerwin Bell to be the OC and we name him the head coach in waiting.

Q: Would Foley go the coordinator route again.

Shane: He cant and he knows it, if we ended up with a Chad Morris I might throw up a little in my mouth.

Q: If you were a betting man who does Foley hire?

Shane: Well if had to put my lifesavings on it, Jim Mcelwain but thats not who I want. I would parlay that Stoops gets the first call too.

If I remember any more I will add to the thread.

Not really they didnt even talk about Muschamp all that much honestly, the show was geared more toward the future and what the next guy is up against.

Nice. Shane is right in regards to the dorms, they are pathetic given the sec standards. UF is getting an IPF and the other football facilities are good. The dorms really bring down the facilities perspective as a whole though.

In Shane's defense, it's really really really fricking hard to feel good about UF's football program right now.
