Just want to get a sense of what you guys mean when you say a player -QB especially- is being "developed"

I ask because in other threads, names of other QBs being said to being developed better than ours. Have stats and film that say otherwise

So are you going by win / loss records or actually playing the position? You know, Reading defenses and going through progressions and delivering the ball on time.
And no, QBs running around until a WR comes open is not a sign of development. No defense can cover wrs more than a few seconds. Thats back yard football, not development..No play in any playbook says snap ball, run around and find open guy..

Development means different things to different people.

But I think objectively:

1. Helping a kid learn your system so that he knows where the ball should go in descending order from play design target 1-3 etc.

2. Well trained qbs who understand their system drop back and release shortly after the end of their drop. This can be and must be taught.

There are a ton of other things too. Footwork, throwing motion, pocket discipline, when and how to throw the ball away, etc.

Some of this improves with xp but it can all be taught.

The bottom line is you should be able to teach a qb to read a defense so that he and the wr know where the potential vulnerability will be pre snap. Once the ball snaps and the defense moves if #1 is covered a well trained qb should know exactly where to look for #2 and so on.

Stuff like that.

Understanding what the defense is doing or wants to do also.

I relate player development to not just QB’s but all players.

In my profession “General Maintenance “ I’m much more proficient than when I first started. As is to be expected. My decision making, understanding, and whatnot is faster. Do I make mistakes and/or get in over my head? Of course.

A large part of the problem developing Franks is that the coaches had to overhaul his wind up delivery motion, then teach footwork, then teach system, then teach how to read defenses.

You cant overload a frosh QB with too much info. When you have a QB who is not fond of contact and scrambles at the drop of a hat, then it is a process to break those habits.
UF recruited Franks because of the huge upside in his cannon arm and height.

We can only hope that Franks auto corrects some of his mistakes, because coaches have shown him game films and he knows what he has done wrong....so he has to fix it and the coaches can only teach and reinforce the positives to keep him confident.
