Haven't watched Air Force in years, but do they run the option? I was assuming he ran a pro-style since he was a former NFL OC.

The only guy who can do it and win is Paul Johnson and that's only because he coaches in the ACC. And apparently the guy up at Navy.

And Mike Houston.

According to Wikipedia, they have run some form of option offense since 1982... LINK

I really believe this is all a formality. Nothing has changed.

The only possible wrench that might be thrown in the gears is if LSU were to fire Miles and immediately offer Herman ... which I doubt they would do.

They would want to go after Jimbo first IMHO, then Herman.

If they reached-out to Herman would he be willing to wait and risk losing our offer?

I don't know.

If Herman were to tell Tanner he is waiting to see what LSU does ... how would Tanner react?

Again, I dunno.

Fuente appears to be gone, a done deal for Va Tech evidently.

Then Kirby Smart becomes our fall-back guy.

I still believe, based upon everything I am hearing and my sources are really good ... that this meeting with Herman is a formality.

IMO, he'd go for Smart immediately. If Herman was our #1 and could be willing to be 2nd fiddle for another job, that would tell Ray all he needs to know. What we can't forget here is that SC is hiring for the job, they have all the power in the situation. Being a 2nd fiddle choice isn't something Ray wants to build into our brand.

Herman, Smart, and Fuente are all excellent options. If we get any of the 3 of them we made the best move we could. However, we're going to need to get someone who wants to be here and looks at this as his destination job/project job.

If Tom Herman builds us into a Playoff Championship level team, we'll make it tough for any CFB team to get him away from us, b/c we'll match whatever it takes to keep him with Ray Tanner at the helm.

(UPDATE 11/24) We are told today a tentative agreement on an offer in principle between USC and Tom Herman has been reached. The deal is contingent on Herman and his wife liking what they see when they visit USC and Herman and Ray Tanner being comfortable with one another. That visit could take place as early as Sunday or the first part of next week depending on the outcome of Houston’s game Friday with Navy. A Houston loss would expedite the process. All information at this time points toward Herman. All other names are simply fallback prospects should things not work out with Herman.

....and of course, Ray Tanner has already denied that it's true.

Sounds strikingly similar to the "reports" that Muschamp was coming here.

Not believing it til I see it.

That rumor was started by a random anonymous poster on 247.

This is being reported by Phil Kornblut so it's pretty different

I thought it was Phil as well by the byline says a sportstalk contributer...so it could be just as baseless.

Whenever these vague reports surface, we need to approach with caution before building hope. It basically says there is a deal to consider a deal, yet it all hinges on the result of a game that has yet to be played.

It's vague enough to be believable, but could also be total BS.

Am I the only one hoping Herman finishes strong at Houston? I'm certainly not pulling for him to lose.

If all of the reports are indeed true, he will be in Garnet and Black in due time.

I do want him to finish strong...but then I'd really, really like to know wtf is going on and if the rumors will be substantiated.

I felt as if I were betraying Herman typing "Go Navy"...but then the really selfish side of me took over and made me do it.

I have no problem saying "Go Navy" as they are a defacto team I want to win every week outside a game against USC. I wish no harm for Herman's resume, but if Navy wins out they will be looking good. The Marine in me wants to see them succeed.

Definitely the best approach to have, but there were more legs to the Muschamp thing than just baseless rumor.
