Once it cools down a little bit nothing beats getting oysters at Bowen's Island.

Not trying to be rude but anyone that says Hymans is good has no clue what they are talking about. Hymans is garbage and I'd rec you hit a Wendys before Hymans. The owner specifically requests any and all seafood that is ready to turn bad so he can get it for pennies on the dollar. The line you see out front is half fake. He grabs kids and give them a free lunch to stand in line for an hour and make it appear that there is always a line. Getting the picture.

Now to the OP your very vague and quite frankly asking broad questions. For instance good places to eat. 98% of places to eat in Charleston would be in your top 10 places to eat in a city the size of Atlanta. Charleston is factually ranked as the #3 Rest. City in America only behind New York and San Francisco. Good places to live? The college of Charleston makes up probably 30% of downtown and unless you get real stupid and live in the obvious hood. The student whose done no research will be fine.

Stay in Georgia and day trip it? Have you done any homework? The nearest city in Ga to Charleston is at least a 2 hour drive to Charleston. Seems not real worth it to me. And what game were you going to take him to? I guess a basketball game? Because CofC doesn't have a football team?

I am aware of that and driving up early am so I am Charleston by 8 am or so, spend the day, and be back with family in GA by say 10 pm.

Getting to see family is always worth it to me.

They grew up about 10% ACC sports and 90% SEC sports so they are a huge SEC sports fan. If they wanted to go to a USC vs SEC game in Columbia I would make that happen just as I have taken them to other SEC events for years.

I know some of the folks in the basketball office at USC but it could be any SEC sport and they favor basketball and football while their sibling favors volleyball and equestrian. If there is something cool but not sports related that works too.

I am aware of this. I was thinking about SEC sports in SC, NC, and GA when I am in the area.

My cousins lived in Aiken for ages but moved further south in the 80's so I no longer have that source for current info and what is not totally out of date. The issue is discovering what is cool to a kid in the college age range in a place they will call home for the next few years.

a) kids like free meals
b) kids like to go to cool places
If I appear cool and get to spend time with them then I win.

Just chiming in to say please don't recommend Hymans. That's clearly a tourist trap.

If this is a getting to know Charleston trip then do breakfast at Hominy Grill, lunch at Basil, and dinner at Rue de Jean. Those are three well-respected Charleston stand-bys that anyone just moving here and living downtown should get acquainted with. If you want to get flashy try Macintosh or FIG. For coffee go to Kudu.

agree, hymans is garbage. In any other city it mught pass for a decent place, but too many better options there to stand in line at that shithole.

I believe I was there last summer after we went deep sea fishing. It's right off the creek and you can pull your boat up to it, it's close by the Lighthouse.
