Or maybe I'm just late to the party. But I was shopping for a new gamecock shirt and saw advertisements with #UofSC, when did this happened? Is this our solution to the southern cal fiasco copying CofC?

We've been using UofSC for decades that I know of, at least dating back to the early to mid 80s when we beat So Cal at our place.
It's become a mandated catch phrase from the athletic department recently with the hire of Charles Bloom. He uses it regularly in his tweets and a lot of people have taken notice including some t-shirt makers who knew they could do t-shirts with the hash tag without having to pay rights fees for doing so ... although there has been some talk that the university may challenge their use of our official colors on the Ts.
Bill Battle, the former Tennessee Vol who started the college licensing company and made millions in doing so ... I think he's stepped down to do something else and during the transition the company has not been as proactive going after every little potential trademark issue.
The university will go after the t-shirts eventually though, as long as panatone 205, or whatever, is being used during the screening process. That's how they eventually got Chip Presioso over at Palmetto Promotions when he released the Bad Cock.
