South Carolina football player Javon Charleston, a reserve defensive back, has been charged with assault and burglary in Lexington County, according to police documents.

quote:

A police report says that on June 17, Charleston was exchanging text messages with a woman. When she didn't respond, he went to the place she was staying and entered the residence around 2 a.m, according to the report.

The woman woke up to find Charleston at the foot of her bed, she told police. Charleston got into a verbal altercation with a man who also was in the bed, the woman reported.

Charleston then chased the man out of the house, according to the report. He returned to the house to find the doors locked and tried to break down the door. The report says he then began taking the screens off the windows, attempting to gain entry.

The woman said that after she heard something break, Charleston was in the house, the report said. The woman ran out of the back door, but Charleston caught up with her and grabbed her by the neck, calling her a "dirty slut," and pushing her down the stairs, the woman reported. He then took her phone.

I should imagine him putting his arm around her neck

What I actually imagine is him grabbing a handful of neck fat

I'm gonna view this the way Pickens fans would one of their own in this alleged incident... "according to the report, Charleston was not under the influence of any controlled substance, nor did he have anything illegal in his vehicle."

The girl he supposedly assulted just tweeted this:

@sophss17

dont believe what you read! the allegations against Javon Charleston should be dropped immediately . I am his former girlfriend and the girl mentioned in the article. In no way did he hit me EVER or threaten to harm me. This was blown out of proportion. justice will do him right

And if this is her story she's gonna stick with (even if $$ changed hands for it) bring him back.

So is there any kind of update to this or anything?

It hasn’t become some huge thing and a girl claims she’s his girlfriend and this never happened. Someone tell me how to feel

First, let's talk about police reports in general. From what I can gather, an initial police report is public record but subsequent investigations and interviews are not unless used in a trial? And the initial report is simply one officer's interpretations and recordings of an event. So let's say in the heat of the situation, a person exaggerated or diminished something, then the only information given to the public is that. In this case, let's say the woman said he actually had a gun. That new information wouldn't be public. Or let's say she said he never actually laid hands on her, that information wouldn't be public either unless she made it so--and then, in either case, the information is viewed as suspect because it's in antithesis to the original report.

Long way of saying, I don't know how I feel about original police reports being public record until a court case is pending. Let's say she recants the statement and it's just the property issue--shouldn't the report be redacted to not falsely accuse someone? And vice versa, too.

Anyway, lessons here: 1. If you're blowing up your girlfriend at 2 am and she's not answering, don't show up at her place. It's only going to make things worse. 2. If you do show up and somehow get inside and find her with another dude, feel free to make an arse of yourself, but end it all by walking away before you lay hands on someone. 3. If you decide to ignore the first two rules, while you're sitting in your car, call a lawyer.
