Anyone worried about losing Frank?

Rumor has it that he would be high on Cincy's list if Cronin goes to UNLV and high on UNLV's list if Cronin stays in Cincy.

I know Tanner is trying to negotiate a new contract for him but topping off a season that tied the school record for wins with an NCAA tourney snub and suspending 5 players, 2 of which have been arrested is super shitty way to end the year

If we do I hope we give Gregg Marshall a call.

Not really, but it could happen. Frank exceeded expectations, IMO, for this year. We had a NCAAt level team, but were cheated out of a bid. I was just hoping we would get to 20+ Wins, and we instead tied a school record.

If the other 3 guys, who were not charged, involved in the incident are not dismissed, we'll have a decent team next year. Maybe not a 25+ W team, but a team that can make a run at the NCAAt.

I've been hearing about the Cincy rumors as well. It wouldn't shock me if he left.

Frank is really happy here, and now that Thornwell is 100 % coming back, I don't see him leaving. Those two have a bond like no other.

If he did go somewhere else, it would really shock me. I do, however, know that college sports are a business and money talks.

UNLV, probably not.

But Cincy is a possibility. They have a solid brand, and are in the tourney hunt every year.

Frank has worked very hard, but maybe he's bumping into that ceiling that I asked about a few months ago. There's only so much that someone can accomplish here, I'm afraid.

If Martin goes, Marshall is completely out of play. He's been snubbed twice; we have to let that one go. If he does go, I want Tanner to look at Matt McCall at Chattanooga. He's done a fantastic job here.

Not hiring Gregg Marshall after Dave Odom left may be one of the worst decisions ever made by a USC athletic administration.

You know where we hired him from KState I thought to myself we're likely a stepping stone for him. But the only way for that to work was for him to have some success here. It would suck if we lost him this year or next but hopefully that would mean he rebuilt a solid foundation for the next coach to come in and work with... And slowly try to chip away at being a stepping stone.

There is only one true destination job in the conference, and that's UK. Florida has been right behind them when Donavan was there, but the jury is very much out if White can build on that success.

Assuming Martin leaves, we're looking at retreads and young guys that will use the job as a means to the next gig.

If Vandy pulls the trigger on Stallings, we could do a lot worse. I can't believe I'm talking myself into that, though.

But not the worst.

Number 1. Not hiring Dick Sheridan as head football coach from Furman before he bolted for N.C. State.

2. Not hiring Bobby Cremins when he wanted to come "home" as head basketball coach when he wanted to leave Appalachian.

That's absolutely true ... and another perspective from a historical standpoint.

3 - Hiring Cremins away from Ga Tech without making sure it was a done deal and he was committed to return.

4 - Firing Jim Carlen.

But as far as Gregg Marshall is concerned, here's something to think about.

Marshall interviewed with Mike McGee ... and Mike McGee couldn't stand him. Marshall is abrasive, obnoxious and capricious. McGee felt he would not be a good fit here.

That was confirmed by Eric Hyman, who also interviewed Marshall for the job when it came open the second time.

With regard to the possibility that Frank Martin might covet the Cincy job ... who knows. Cincy is definitely a basketball school and they can probably afford to pay him ... but Martin seems to like the challenge here, likes being in the SEC and wants to build something. His wife likes it here and so do his kids. Additionally, he is close to his mother here, a quick hop, skip and a jump away. But I will add this. Tanner was not happy that Hyman hired Martin just before departing. Tanner wanted that to be his first hire as AD. Tanner has not always agreed with Martin's public persona and the two are really not all that close as one might expect. So I suspect, and this is strictly my observation, that Tanner is going through the motions of trying to retain him, but privately I think Tanner may be hoping to make another hire if Martin doesn't soon acquiesce to the current offer. Tanner is perceiving the hold-out as a show of a lack of loyalty while Martin is simply doing the smart business thing, giving himself time to consider all options, and perhaps working his position for a little more solid footing within the program ... particularly the buyout clause if he is fired for whatever reason.

We must admit, the SEC is not the best basketball conference to build a career in at the moment ... and also, the cards Martin has been dealt are a tough hand to play, if you'll excuse the poker analogy ... but think about it for a moment if you will.

Look at what he is facing next year with the loss of the two Lithuanians, Carrera, ... and then throw the dumbasses Cobb and Gregory into the mix.

Better yet, let's look at it another way.

Who do we have coming-in, new blood, plus who is he going to find to fill-out the roster with ... replacing the Cobb and Gregory who he was not expecting to lose.

He's going to be taking all of that into account when he makes his final decision.

That's good money ... I could live off of that when I was his age. Plus he gets a car of his choice ... and he's getting a loan for his house at nothing with some incentives that will basically pay off his debt if he wins big, not counting the bonuses for winning the conference title, getting deep into the dance, etc.
