Townsend was offered by Alabama in June and actually committed on June 3 after an impressive camp performance. His primary recruiter is defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.
"He had a verbal commitment on June 3, but he wanted to have the opportunity to visit other colleges to see what they had to offer as well," Townsend's father said.
Townsend, a 6-foot, 180-pound prospect, is rated the No. 20 athlete and the No. 193 overall player in the country per the 247Sports Composite. At this time of his commitment he was trending to Alabama at 100 percent.

Tanner junior Chadarius Townsend visited Auburn on Saturday for the Tigers' recruit cookout. It was the first time the 2017 Rivals250 athlete had been back to Auburn since receiving an offer in June.
"We really enjoyed it," Townsend said. "We talked with the coaches and took pictures. It was great." Townsend, who is ranked the No. 10 overall recruit in Alabama in 2017, also reunited with a member of his family, cousin Jalyn Armour-Davis of St. Paul's. Armour-Davis, just a sophomore, also has an early offer from Auburn. "I hadn't seen him in a while so it was good to see him," Townsend said. "I have been seeing good things about him so I figured he might be there. I knew Auburn had offered and that he likes them." So does Townsend. He has for some time. "I grew up an Auburn fan," Townsend said. "I like everything about Auburn." Townsend's offer from Auburn came last month after working out at cornerback for secondary coach Travaris Robinson. Townsend played quarterback last season for Tanner, but Auburn offered him at cornerback. "It felt really good getting the offer," Townsend said. "Knowing I have a chance to play at Auburn felt great." Auburn, Alabama and Kentucky have offered Townsend, who is just shy of six feet tall and weighs 180 pounds. He's also receiving interest from Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Townsend doesn't plan to make an early decision, and will return to Auburn for a game in the fall. Rivals ranks Townsend the No. 222 overall player in 2017.
