I know there are some rumblings around the SC fanbase about how often our schedule is changed to accommodate ESPN. It's beginning to get a little out of hand because no one knows how to plan trips to ballgames anymore - especially if you live out of town.

Now Dabo Sweeney is claiming ESPN is going to change their Georgia game to a Monday night, on Labor Day.

Interesting response from UGA admins on this idea:

UGA would never let that happen with the USCe game just five days later.

Why would Dabo complain about that? Do they have a tough game scheduled after that?

I remember when only about 4 or 5 games per team per year were televised. Now, maybe one AU game against a FCS school will be pay per view. Otherwise, I see every snap of every AU game for the price of cable which I would pay for anyway.

It is a trade off I'm more than happy to make.

When the new contract SEC negotiates with ESPN kicks in you better believe your SEC team will play when the networks say their going to play.

The good thing is that ESPN wants night games for the best games!

There is no chance in hell that will happen.

TV networks have a say in what time they will air your game, but as far as I know they can't force you to play on a different day.

And as mentioned, nobody in our AD is dumb as dirt stupid enough to play the clemson game and then have 4 days of rest/practice before SC.

ETA: And btw OP, dabo never said ESPN is changing the game day, he said it "could" change (which he pulled straight from his arse considering our AD have never heard about it).

Ditto. I see more games now living in Missouri than I did when I lived on Stadium Dr. not 400 yards away from Razorback Stadium.

Yes. They put the LSU/A&M game on at 11am so that it wouldn't interfere with the Texas game they were broadcasting on ABC later that night. 11am games should be reserved for shitty B1G schools that enjoy Beth Mowens calling their games. They are not for ranked SEC teams to play in against each other.

You're actually 100% right about that. No SEC games should be kicked-off at 11AM local time.

Well, stupid or not - that's up for debate.

What I do know is that TV money may be good, but there comes a point when you are selling your soul to the devil.

Since TV has taken over a lot of other, more traditional, things have suffered.

Stadiums are rarely packed anymore. Fewer fans are traveling to away games. Local economies are taking financial hits - economies that, at one time, depended upon those home games to put money in the bank for the entire year.

Now I will admit that the increased influence of TV on the game has been good for the chinese big screen TV manufacturers and for the recliner industry. But hell, there is not a single game on the schedule that is not televised these days. If it's not a network game, or a cable game, then it is a pay-per-view game.

It's outta hand. Especially when they control the scheduled times only a few weeks out. Who has time to arrange a travel schedule one or two weeks out? And I'm mainly talking about the people who are a few hours away from their games who depend on hotels for places to sleep if it's a night game or a late afternoon game vs those who might drive home if it's not.

I'd take less money to return some of the old traditional feel.

I'm not too big on the afternoon games in College Station in Sept either. Hotter 'n hell, but that's what we'll see with Bama next season. Big Game....2:30Central time slot.
