Former Alabama consensus All-American Javier Arenas has joined the Alabama staff, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.
Areanas’ role is yet to be defined. The former standout defensive back and returner has been spotted at the Crimson Tide’s practices this week. He has been shadowing the coaching staff to determine if coaching is something the 29 year old wants to pursue.
Per NCAA guidelines, which restrict the amount of on-the-field personnel that are allowed to instruct, Arenas will serve in an off-the-field role.
Arenas, a Tampa native, had a stellar career at Alabama (2006-09), which culminated in a 2009 BCS national championship. He made active rosters for three NFL teams (Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals and Atlanta Falcons).
Saban the mentor
Arenas is the latest in a host of former Saban players the veteran coach has found a role for in his program. Former defensive back Nick Perry is a graduate assistant. Former defensive tackle Josh Chapman is a strength and conditioning coach. Former linebacker Denzel Devall is the director of player development. Former defensive back Geno Matias-Smith serves in an off-the-field capacity. Former running back Glen Coffee joined the staff this week as a student-assistant as he continues work towards his degree.

Maybe they can add a little "2008-2009 toughness" to this year's team.

Arenas is one of my all time favorites. Maybe we can disguise him and put him in to return punts?

Arenas returning punts was a thing of beauty

Same. I can't find it anywhere online, but before the Blackout game he was interviewed by Ian Rapaport who was at The News at the time and Ian was asking Javy about Mareno. Javy said, "so? I mean. he makes plays. guys make plays"
Ian said, "have you seen his highlights?" to which Javy responded, "You seen some of MY highlights?"

This. That team had some scrappy mutts on it. I say Arenas was one of them as a compliment. Not a prototypical Saban player, going by measurables. I doubt Saban would have even recruited him, but he stuck around, worked, and showed results on special teams and on defense. Not to mention he had that come get some swagger that I like to see. Not arrogance, but an I'm going to beat you or kick your arse trying mentality.

You can thank Dave Ungerer for that one. He had to plead Shula to take him.
We will see Ungerer game two against Fresno State. He's the special teams coach for the Bulldogs now.

It amazes me how much good press Glenn has received, he did not leave the Army on good terms....

Great to see Coach Saban bringing some of his Players .
Javy may be my favorite of Coach's Bama Players. That Corner Blitz was lethal. And such a great Punt Returner.

it was kept on the DL. That's the whole reason he got sent to Eglin.

To this day, nobody in the Saban era has run the corner blitz as effectively as Javy did. All the 4 and 5 star corners we have had and a lightly recruited afterthought given a scholarship basically as a return man ran the most devastating corner blitz we've had. I love Arenas.

He failed multiple drug tests, and was not a ranger only supported swamp phase at 6rtb.
