Actually he was acquitted of murder. The 9 years was for robbery-- which is about right.
You don't get to try someone over and over just because you were too incompetent to get a conviction the first time

Just sayin he brutally murdered two people, and he only served 9 years. Not a bad deal for him.
I know how the murder trial went. It was a shitshow. I was in college when it was going on.
