Would you be OK with your university hiring a HC who quit there as a player?

If a guy played football one year at your school and couldn't hack it and quit, would you be comfortable hiring him as HC decades later?

Arkansas did. Houston Nutt transferred to Oklahoma State.

Who else?

Alabama should have with Bobby Bowden. But screwed it up.

Probably not.

Then again, our last head coach that played for Auburn turned out to be pretty successful so who knows?

Yes

Most coaches are grown adults not 19 year old kids.

Absolutely, if he's a good coach.

Would you be comfortable with a coach who was never a good enoug player to make your team's roster?

I'd be less comfortable hiring a HC who walked out on the team previously.

Exactly. Would you want to be scrutinized your whole life for something that happened to you when you were a very young man? I doubt anybody would.

If he was a good HC then I wouldn't have an issue with it. People can change a lot from when they were in their late teens and early 20s.

I would be much more ok with hiring a HC who quit as a player, than a HC that quit on his players (looking at you Fran).

Of course. He may not be a good enough player to play at that level, but coaching is another animal. Not many of the top players are also top coaches.

Jalen Hurd is the only ex-Vol I know of who outright quit and short of a damn convincing reason and come to Jesus apology/explanation/begging for forgiveness/image rehab years ahead of time, the answer is: hell no.

Ed O actually spent his first year at LSU before transferring to Northwestern St.

I consider transfers very, very, different. Hurd quit. Transfers are typically seeking PT because they realize they have no real shot of playing at their current school and a lot of times coaches encourage them to do that.

Sheriron Jones transferred from UT twice (came back within a week or two the first time for another year) and I'd hire him in a heart beat. He impacted more than one game by encouraging players on the sideline and you could see him even as a player as future coach but suffered a rash of injuries until Dormady and Guarantano made the depth chart a near impossibility for him to crack. However, he's talented enough to start at a lot of programs.

It was also obvious he loved UT and fans loved him for it. I'd welcome him back as a coach in a heartbeat. In fact, I see that in his future.

yea, like it even matters. nick saban sucked as a player at Kent frickin' State. playing and coaching are not the same skill sets.
