Does this year diminish good OOC games?

I don't know.

Washington played well and won their conference.

But they played no one significant OOC.

Penn State probably should have played Troy instead of Pitt.

I know the committee says the respect non conference games, but it seems like winning the conference with no significant OOC games is a winning formula.

The counter argument is Ohio State, good OOC games without a conference title can get you in.

To me, this looks like Conferences like the SEC will be encouraged to play tough OOC teams because they are likely to get a shot even if they do not win conference title.

I think the opposite is true for the PAC12 and maybe the Big12.

If Oklahoma had not played Ohio State and Houston, they would probably be in if instead they had played Arkansas State and La Tech.

Ohio State got in because they beat OU on the road.

If they had beaten a cupcake at home they likely watch Penn State go instead.

Strong OOC games are great if you win them, and suck if you lose them.

Ohio State wouldn't have made it without their OOC.

I don't think so. They're going to abide by their own preconceived notions until teams prove them wrong. Ohio State never proved them wrong enough.

Next year, I can imagine the exact opposite happening- where a team is punished for not playing a good enough OOC schedule.

Yeah.

I think if you are scheduling and in the SEC or a big name in the BIG, you keep playing tough OOC because they can get you in without the title.

But if you are in the PAC12, I see little incentive, tbh.

Big 12 as well.

I agree the OOC made it. But that was because the conference is already considered tough as well.

However, Washington shows that a weak SOS and OOC can get you in also.

I am sure Oklahoma fans are thinking about that. And non-big name teams in the BIG are thinking the same.

Again, I think there is an argument to put Penn State in, but just as strong, if not stronger for Ohio State. I could have lived with either choice.

I think more about what this means long term. Big name programs in some conference are encouraged to play tough OOC to get in. Weaker teams in weaker conferences just need to schedule OOC cupcakes and sweep their conference.

This was an odd year. Lack of really good teams this year. Even Bama has a very flawed QB that will likely cost his team a few points. A bit of parity.

If Oklahoma would have scheduled 2 cupcakes instead of Houston and Ohio State they would probably be 12-0 and #2 in the playoffs.

It's not like the committy set a blue print on how to make the top 4. They change their reasoning weekly/yearly to get certain results.

I agree that this year was a little odd, and as others noted the committee does seem to change what it values.

But I would think if you are Big12 Team or a PAc12 Team, this season would lead you think you have a better shot not taking the risk instead of playing a tough OOC game.

Again, I think they compromised a bit by favoring OOC for one team and Conference Title for another.

But I would think weaker conferences would focus on the second option.
