I understood that he would be at Bama short term; actually thought he'd leave after last year; wasn't expecting him next year. I understand his interest in a HC position (Houston being the most immediate).

What I don't get is why he would leave Saturday after the SECCG or why he would leave Alabama for LSU, a lateral move, even with him and Coach O being friends. Is it because he can't stay?

Reading between the lines I'm guessing that the Saban-Kiffin relationship has deteriorated? I'm guessing that EO talked to Kiffin days ago about LSU, prior to him being made head coach?

One more speculative question while I'm guessing ... has the Kiffin departure been in the works for a long time; re: Sarkisian -- Saban preparing for the inevitable?

Am I close?

I suppose that's your answer.

As for why Sarkisian was hired: We all knew Kiffin was relatively short term here, in the best of circumstances or working relationship between him and St. Nick. Coach Saban was proactive in hiring Sarkisian months ago. It's one thing among many things that makes him the best coach in the business.

I don't understand the people who can't fathom him making a lateral move. People in all types of careers make lateral moves all the time.

He may not be happy here anymore. It's not hard to "get"

You're right, it's not unfathomable; lateral moves are frequently made, but not for good reason. This one seems a bit odd for a man aspiring to a head coaching position. One good reason would be he's lost his job at Bama, which I suspect but chose to raise it as a question rather than an assertion.

Jmo, since it's been posted that LK contract ends in February of 2017, LK needed a place to go and that is LSU.
Now that the UH job is available LK will pursue that opportunity and have the LSU spot as a fall back if he doesn't get the HC at UH.

As for Sark, I believe LK informed NS early on that 2017 would be his last season at UA. As a result NS reached out to Sark because he was available and his experience as an OC with LK while at SoCal would allow the Bama O to keep plugging away with minimal changes to style and or philosophy of how the offense plays.

Also, as far as the lsu OC job. If LK goes to lsu as OC, look for him to be there no longer than 2 seasons, tops. Could be a 1 and done scenario if a HC opportunity comes up again at the end if 2017. (UTk??)

Here's my suggestion:
Pay absolutely zero attention to what people say will or won't happen.

I think you touched on most of the reasons.

I am somewhat surprised at so few HC jobs being available for him unless some of the darker rumors are true. The coaching fraternity is one where secrets are known to all.
The fact Saban made zero attempt to extend Kiffins contract says a great deal without saying anything.
