It's my understanding that they are not payed in money but in other ways are compensated.
Like tickets to the AU games. Cheep prices on used cars and discounted tickets to 6 flags over Georgia.

In his radio days, Finebaum used to meet with the regulars & feed them things to call in about. Not sure if this still happens or not. They do have a separate phone line to use as you notice they never complain about how long it takes them to get in. Finebaum on his tv show has admitted to meeting one or the other, and it's doubtful this happened at some purely coincidental social function.
