Let's play devil's advocate and look at our Oline classes since Freeze has been named HC.

Using 247:

2012
Ben Still - 3* Backup C
Pierce Burton - 3* RT for 2 years (Juco)
Robert Conyers - 3* 2 year starter
Darone Bailey - 3* Bust

2013
Laremy Tunsil - 5* All Everything LT
Austin Golson - 4* Bust/ Transfer
Daronte Bouldin - 3* Bust
Davion Johnson - 3* Bust

2014
Rod Taylor - 4* 1 year Starter at G
Fahn Cooper - 3* 2 year Starter LT/RT (JuCo)
Jordan Sims - 3* RS then 2nd team G
Tyler Putman - 3* Work in Progress
Sean Rawlings - 3* RS then 2nd team T/G
Talbot Buys - 2* Bust (Juco)

2015
Javon Patterson - 4* Starter at G
Alex Givens - 3* RS
Michael Howard - 3* RS
Jacob Feely - NR RS?

If you go back and look at the 2012 and the 2013 classes, or the classes that should have upperclassmen in them right now, we have 4 bust and 1 that was a juco and graduated. The only players that are contributing are Conyers and Still from '12 and Tunsil from '13. Matt Luke may not be lighting the world on fire but any O Line coach would struggle with that many FR/So in the 2 deep. The problem I have is why did we miss evaluate so many kids in that '13 class. That is an absolute killer.

We may turn out to have a pretty salty O line in '16-'17 but we are just so young right now because we had so many bust in '12 and '13. '12 is understandable but '13 is not.

Taylor didn't redshirt. He'll be a junior next year.

We desperately need linemen, so Freeze is crazy if he lets anyone else slow play us like Richmond did. We passed up on guys who could be contributing right now. I wouldn't be disappointed at all if we took 6 OL in this class, including two Juco guys.

I was hoping to get a little more out of C. Morris this year.

Fixed. And yes we do. Need a couple of Juco guys to bridge the gap.

Worst O-lineman we have. Complete waste of space.

It is true than any O Line coach would struggle, but maybe he can at least coach them to be mean, or at least try to block someone?

Exactly. I really wish you could characterize our oline as going through a "struggle" rather than "abject failure."

OL, like DL, is probably 25% athletic ability, 50% technique/scheme and 25% mindset. I have seen inferior athletes with great technique actually dominate far superior athletes (a slightly poor case since it is HS is what a certain MC center did to Ed Oliver and the DT from Meridian in the past 5 months). We preached "dirty runs" all throughout the spring/summer. Where we seem to be "dropping the ball" is in the technique and mindset area right now and I personally think that falls on coaching/leadership. I would bet that if we brought in Hiller at the beginning of the Spring you'd see a significant level of improvement...then again I doubt it could get worse than 24 rushes for 40 yards against Memphis...

Would every O Line coach misevaluate so many kids? How is this somehow not Lukes fault? I get that nobody would excel with the current line situation we have but Lukes hands are all over this leading up to now. To say nobody could succeed with this line ignores that he's a huge part of why we currently have no depth.

That is kind of my issue with all the blame being on Luke. Does he deserve a lot of blame, yes but it falls under Freeze and offensive staff as well. The finding, recruiting and getting O Lineman to campus is not squarely on Luke's shoulders. The evaluation of prospects has been an epic failure across the board. We seem to have correct it in 2014 but the jury is still out on 2015.

I keep thinking back to 2012 when the O line was serviceable to win 6 games when it couldn't block the wind in 2011. So there has to be some evidence to support that Luke was better than Markuson (sp?).

If we had played 6 games with this O line:

LT: Tunsil
LG: Patterson
C: Conyers
RG: Taylor (Healthy)
RT: Cooper

We aren't having this discussion. The saying is that it takes lineman 3 years to develop. How many 1 and 2 year players are we playing right now? Do we expect young undeveloped players to compete against SEC D lines? Or even experienced American lines? It is just asking a lot.

Its tough. It isn't like Luke is the one making personnel decisions. I'm sure he has a say but ultimately its the HC who decides who we go all in on. Rawlings has played well after RS year, Patterson is solid, Sims has worked his butt off and although he isn't there he appears to be a guy that will be able to contribute. Taylor this summer was having an amazing off season until the bone head decision. Bouldin and Still are the only two you really look at and say wth happened.

This probably won't matter after this year.
