So a group of friends and I were talking about the 2004 1 point safety. So was that the referee perversion of the rules or was that a legitimate call? How does posseion work in that case?

When was possession established? Was it picked up and fumbled into the endzone or was it just swatted into the endzone?

It was completely legit and a damn good bit of knowledge from the zebras.

Too hard to explain on an iPhone. Go look it up, though. It is very interesting.

It has to do with the fact that it hit one of the linemen and the was advanced out and back into the end zone where we were tackled. I don't remember the specifics but I remember those being part of the discussion.

I actually had a conversation with the R about this call within a year after it happened. He said that they got major Kudos from the League office for the one point safety, but got dinged on their grade for the game because it was technically an illegal kick that should have been flagged. The kicker kicked the ball while it was not in the possession of the holder. Should have been a 15 yard penalty from the spot and a loss of down. A&M would have accepted the penalty, which would have meant that the try was no-good.

The point never should have made it on the board.

The amount of rules and the minutiae they cover is truly mind boggling. BTW is that why drop kicks are no longer allowed? The kicker does not have possesion?

Drop kicks are still allowed, but the ball must be dropped by the player in possession of the ball and kicked "simultaneously" when the ball strikes the ground. It's Too complicated to execute well with today's footballs that have sharper points than those of 40 and 50+ years ago that looked/bounced more like a rugby ball.
