Offensive line coach J.B. Grimes took it a step further last week by stacking Lawson next to two All-Americans he watched up close during his time at Virginia Tech: linebackers Corey Moore and Cornell Brown.

Moore won the Lombardi Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the nation's top defensive player in 1999. He also set the Big East sack record with 17 that same season and sits behind Bruce Smith's 46 sacks and Brown's 36 on the all-time sacks list with 35 at Tech.

"I think Carl Lawson is better than both of those guys. Enough said, right?" Grimes said. "The guy is really good. He's uncanny. He's got some things you can't coach. He's got some quickness and some slipperiness."

Grimes believes Lawson compares favorably to former Texas A&M star Von Miller, who won the Butkus Award in 2010.

"He's like blocking smoke," Grimes said. "He can slip through a crack like nothing you've ever seen. The guy is good, man."
