NC O-lineman Will Putnam commits to South Carolina
quote:
Putnam (6-5, 270) is from Harrisburg, NC ...
“I like all the new facilities coming around, all the new renovations and everything,” he said. “They are building a new apartment complex for all the athletes. It’s just great. I like all the new stuff.”
.....
“My big thing was, it is SEC footbal.," he said. “It doesn’t get any bigger than this. It is just such a great opportunity. It’s like a dream I’ve had as a kid to play for a big time school.”
Putnam plays left tackle and also plays on the defensive line. He said coaches tell him they love his speed and agility on the line.
“I kind of pride myself on being flexible and being able to run,” he said. “I run a 5.0 constantly in the 40 and my shuttle is around a 4.6.”

Va Tech made a good run at him, but he's been talking about wanting to play in the SEC ever since we offered. I saw him play last year against Concord, he can move well for his size.

How much more weight do you think he can put on?

I've only seen him in person in pads. I have seen the video interviews with him though. He's closer to 6'5" than 6'4" and around 270 lbs this past season. That's probably a big reason why he moves well and can get outside to block. He won't see the field at SC for at least 3 years with our current depth (probably not until his RS Soph year.) By then, I would expect him to put on at least 30 lbs of good weight. I read somewhere that he dropped below 260 lbs this summer, but that's with the metabolism of a 17 yr old and not that odd.
He's going to come in and be able to do the conditioning drills, they are just going to need to get him with the Staff Nutritionist and develop a dietary plan. I

Sounds like he is pretty good on the other side of the ball. Maybe a DE?

They played him at DT for parts of the game against Concord, but he might have played other games at DE as well. He's quick for a HS OL, but I don't think he'll ever be quick enough for an SEC level DE.
That reminds me about his conditioning again. They did play him both ways last season, full time on OL and part time on DL. I didn't get the impression that he was exhausted either in the 4thQ. but yeah, he doesn't have the speed quickness to play DE at a D1 level, although, he could be used as a DT. I don't think we're looking at him at all for DL though.

(ETA: I went back and looked at his Jr Highlights, they did play him at DE some and he did ok with it. Hickory Ridge is 3A and NCHSAA only goes to 4A. So it wasn't at the highest level, but still pretty decent HS competition, except within the district. Southpiedmont 3A district was down last year. Concord went undefeated and then Hickory Ridge was the next best team. Over half the district finished at .500 or below.)
EETA: I was mistaken, Hickory Ridge actually ran a 3-4 defense against Concord, and they had him lined up as a DE. Here are the highlights of him on defense that game. The RB he was catching is former Vols commit, Rocky Reid, who is now going to Wake Forrest as he was Pre-Processed.

Looked like it. He changed the state constitution to make life harder for blacks.

I did not but I'm glad to know it's running somewhere.
Nikki Haley has ticked-off a lot of Gamecock fans in the past year .... so there is a push to take a pound of flesh outta her precious taterheads.
Pitchfork Ben Tillman was one of the worst racists in history ... if anything needs to be removed from those statehouse grounds it is his statue. He was an evil frick ... not to mention having the voodoo princess come-in and put that chicken curse on us a hundred years ago. It was a stinker getting that thing exorcised.

A strong advocate for Jim Crow, that's for sure. He was integral in the founding of Clemson and now they're having a big debate about changing the name Tillman Hall, which is like their most historic / iconic building.
