Offseason thread alert: Question about Col Reb and the Black Bear?

I understand that OM wanted to move away from the antebellum and Civil War Col Reb as their mascot, but why didn't they just update him to a modern or WWII type colonel? Was that idea ever floated or did the admins just want to try and bury the history of the school?

I figured that was it. Just like with the flag in South Carolina the oppossed or offended are unwilling to work toward a compromise that would respect everyone (except the extremistist on both sides) opinions. I think that a WWII type colonel riding in on a jeep or sherman tank would have been badass. Especially if there was Ms unit or soldier they could tie it to.
