In baseball, ever single pick has it's own slot value. After the 10th round, each pick has a slot value of $100,000 I believe. If you add up all of a teams slot values for all of their picks in the first 10 rounds, that is their pool of money they can spend. For instance, add up the values for all of the Royals picks and they have a slot pool of $7,206,700. You can see the amount for each of those picks here. They should all add up to that total amount. The Royals can choose to divide that up amongst their picks however they want. That means if a pick has a slot value of $600,000 and they sign that guy to $500,000(thus paid under slot), they still have that other $100,000 that they can use to pay someone else over slot.

Picks after the 10th round can only reduce the amount of your pool money. For instance, if you pay a 15th round pick $150,000, then that total pool above would be reduced by $50,000. Conversely, for picks after the 10th round, if you pay them under slot (i.e. $50,000), it does not free up that amount for your pool. If a team goes over their total pool by up to 5% of their total pool, then they have to pay a "tax" of I believe 75% of that overage. If they exceed it by more than 5%, they start losing draft picks, so you'll rarely if ever see them go over by more than 5%.

In this case, Doherty was drafted in the 15th round. He has a slot value of $100,000. The Royals total pool is $7,206,700. What to watch is what they sign their picks in the first 10 rounds for and making sure they don't pay any others after the 10th round more than $100,000. Here are the Royals picks. These guys do a pretty good job of tracking the signings and indicating if the signing was under or over slot.

My guess...he comes to Mizzou unless he'll play pro for $100,000 and doesn't think he'll improve at Mizzou. KC's first two picks will get minimum of slot and maybe over it. They're both high school kids who have to be lured away from college. You're 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th round picks all depend on how much the team values them. Probably all at slot. KC's 6th round pick will probably be way under slot. He is a college senior and they have no bargaining power so teams draft them to free up money elsewhere. That slot is $241,700. I wouldn't be surprised to see him paid $5,000, freeing up almost $236,700. Same with their 8th round pick except that slot value is $168,000, saving $163,000. Same for your 10th round pick where the slot is $149,000, saving $144,000. That's around $500,000 with just those 3 picks alone, much less if they save elsewhere.

The question is how much of that money saved will be used up to sign the earlier picks. I suppose the 2nd question is one that only Doherty can answer which is what amount would lure him away from college.

The other thing I noticed, Doherty is probably the first pick after the 10th round that the Royals would probably sink money into. 2 of those picks are seniors so you know they're not getting extra money. 2 are college juniors who probably can't be lured away from college, and if so, probably won't require much more than the $100,000.

I will try to track the Royals' signings and update it here but my guess is he ends up at Mizzou.

He's on campus right now, had a physical this morning and will start practice tomorrow (or whenever they start). He also moved all his stuff into the dorms today. Not saying he still couldn't sign, but its seeming less and less likely.
