Building a flower box for mother's day question

I am thinking of using a treated 2 4x4 8 ft and then cut a third one in half for the ends to make a 8x4 box.
Question I have is should I use 2 on each so a total of 6 4x4 or just 1 for a total of 3.
Also should I cut the 4x4 on the ends at 3'4" (40 in)?
I am just trying to see what opinions are for this. The landscape timber and railroad ties here are not great quality.

I'm really not following what you're looking to do but why do you want to use 4x4s?

4x4's are better quality use them for decking and treated so wont rot.
I am asking a) do I want to double stack them up? b) do I want to cut the end pieces 8" shorter to compensate for the 4x4?
the sides will be 8ft long 4x4, so that being the case the ends should be 3'4" 4x4 correct?

I used (2) 8' 2x12's
Cut them into 5' & 3' lengths and put them together. Then took 3 10' 2x4's cut them into 5' lengths and spread them out evenly to make the floor and planked them with cedar pickets leaving 1/4" gaps for water to drain. Used 4x4's to give it 4' legs so it sits at a nice height and mama doesn't have to get on the ground to enjoy it.
Lined it with black plastic, filled it with potting soil and stained the outside.
Your mama will love it.

Very nice, and so easy to build. I'm going to make one.

I like yours a lot better than what I was going to do.
Mine I was going to have to drill holes drive rebar etc.
Plus it allows her not to bend over and let little ones when they come over to not create havoc with it.
She wants to plant tomatoes eventually, will that type of box hold tomatoes?

Of course. The one in the pic is what I built my wife for her herbs.

Thanks
I've built a couple now. Very inexpensive. Takes about 1.5 hours to cut the wood and assemble if your letting kids help, less than an hour if your doing it by yourself

This is what I built for my wife:
I built 3 of them. They are 6ft long and made from cedar.
Plant taller stuff in the middle where it's deeper and smaller stuff out on the edge.
They are pretty wonderful.

You aint lying on that one.
Mama pulled the I am going to let you watch the NCAA tournament trick on me. I wasn't smart enough to realize it until the sweet 16. It has cost me some new clothes and a new pair of running shoes, which she did not need
