So what was the deal with the SEC this year?

Im trying to figure out if we were as dominant this year as we have usually been. Middle of the season, i thought the sec west was nasty and that anyone of those teams could have held their own in the playoff. Yet when we got to the bowl games, it seemed like every major school laid an egg. LSU including, no doubt that was an embarassing loss to ND. Why was this? Were we not as tough as everyone thought we were mid-season or was there just extreme exhaustion at the end of the season after playing so many tough games?

Bound to have a bad year every now and then concerning bowl games. As far as league play, the biggest problem is the parity among the schools in the SEC. The West is nasty top to bottom. The East is following suit. There is no easy win except maybe Vandy (sorry vandals). It isn't going to get any better.

For Alabama, I know that Ohio State was just playing really great football at the end of the season. Sometimes you have to tip your cap. Alabama didn't play all that poorly in that game.
Even the good college teams are flawed and when you run into a talented team firing on all cylinders, you sometimes get beat.
Ole Miss also ran into a team that was playing incredible ball (TCU) although what happend to them was pretty inexusable.
LSU and Auburn were kind of up and down all year. Flashes of great play and bad pay at times. Not that surprising what happened in their bowl games.
MSU peaked early and I think they overachieved based on their talent level. Caught up with them last 1/4 of the season.
Arkansas had talent deficiencies but they started executing their scheme really well the second half of the season and were on an upward trend. Still not a great team by any means.
Texas A&M kind of went off the rails at times. Not sure what happened there. I don't think their coaching staff did a good job last year.

It comes down to coaching and preparation during bowl season. Teams who are "major" shouldn't lay eggs, but alas...
The SEC teams who took care of business have a winner's mentality, discipline and an overall understanding of what is expected of them even during Christmas ham and fireworks season.

The West was overrated to begin the year and the hype grew, which is why you saw the dropoff at the end of the season.

A combination of the 2. Pre-season built up expectations for every West team, but that is not attainable. When you play each West team, it is literally impossible for everyone to have 8+ wins.
When you only play 1 or 2 games against legit OOC competition, it is difficult to get a real read on talent or ranking. See South Carolina last season early. Were they really a top 15 team? nope.
Do away with preseason rankings, and no rankings until 6 weeks in. That will solve your problem.

Complacency and ego. It's impossible not to let those 2 things get in the mind of teams who've experienced a great deal of success. It happens to every team.
After being on top of the college football world as a conference for so long, many teams go in to their bowl games expecting to win just because they are SEC. Their confidence becomes arrogance. Meanwhile, the opponents are preparing like it's the super bowl because they have a chance to beat a SEC team

Never rank a season midyear. Way too many games left to play and the pressure builds.
